History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
I am freshening up some of the black oxide finish screws on my car & I am curious if these screws on the ground effects should also be oxide black? There not rusted, but they appear to be weathered from road debris.
No such screws on my 85 at all. They don't look OE to me.

Hmmmm, It has these all the way around. Maybe I'll try googling some images & see what I can find. Knowing the history of the car, I don't think anyone would have changed them, but maybe?
This is on an 89 BTW, sorry for not specifying that.
I just found this picture from an 89 low mile mile TTA on ebay. Not definitive, but they look like the same 7mm headed screws. Really hard to see clearly tho.

There are differences between Camaros and Firebirds. As a consequence, you might want to be specific about you car: year, make, model and so on.

Sorry about that, I thought the picture was a give away that it was on a firebird.
I didn't think the camaro's had screws on that section behind the door, do they? Its been a while since I looked at mine. I made a few assumptions that I probably shouldn't have.

You are correct, camaros dont have screws there. I have seen it both ways on firebirds though with some having 7mm and others having Phillips screws. To me the 7mm screws are the ones that should be there and it is up to you on the color, unless you're going for the concourse look.

Re: should these screws be black?
It may depend on the day. Some cars got 1/4" head screws holding on the trim piece on top of the door, other cars got the #2 Phillips head... Actually if they ran out during production I would not see why they would not literally go to the hardware store and buy up everything they had to keep the line going... My father used to work for Buick City and they had days where they would run out of a screw, and someone would literally drive to the hardware store and buy whatever was closest to what they needed.
My '88 GTA has Phillips-head screws on the front end, and hex-head screws on the back end. Panels have never been off car since it was new.
That's exactly how mine is up front too. I was curious about the push in retainers for the wheel well plastic, but I see that must be correct as well.
On my car, the 7mm headed screws in front would have cut into the tires when turning. Even with the flat headed Phillips screws the tires pass reeeealy close to them.

I have Recently learned that the tire rub on the front plastic inner fender and the fender may in part be due to the brand of tire. When I went to the 17" Wheels I really liked the looks of the Yokohama 100ES (IIRC). Every time I backed up and cranked the wheel to lock the tire would rub, but when I went to the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 Wide Oval, my problem is now gone.

Yeah, everything you see in my photos is exactly how it rolled off the line in Van Nuys 27 years ago. Nothing has been removed or altered, and I'm the original owner.
