IROC-Z California Special

Hi there, new member. Was wondering if any members on here could post more pics of the California IROC-Z special. I caught an add on a FB page recently and there does not seem to be a lot of photos online on them. I assume not many people have too many around that are in good or mint condition? Also any stories on how you found yours would be a plus.

There's an informative thread somewhere on them.

Here's one of them.

Re: IROC-Z California Special

Welcome to TGO.

Yeah....not to many of them around, and seemingly even fewer pictures. Most of the time, a google search turns up the same few that I've seen over the years. I think part of the issue is that fewer options on a car isn't often what you look for. 30 years later, a rare car with a super clean look is pretty cool! Back then however, it was probably....and I'm just guessing...but probably just seen as a base/stripped down Iroc.

I think they're awesome, and similar to the Bullit Mustang, have always looked the super clean look of a muscle car like that.

Are you looking for one?

Just for the record, the California Special is a Mustang!!

The California IROC is what you're looking for.

Definitely an odd duck. To me they look like they're missing things. Kind of like when you see a thirdgen that's been through a few repaints and the door moldings, decals, emblems are missing, and the locks, door handles, etc are all painted body color. That early 90's Super Chevy "paint all the chrome body color, with a neon burst down the side, and a billet bare-foot gas pedal! Yeah boy!" look.

Re: IROC-Z California Special

I don't know Drew, it's a pretty slick car without the rear deck spoiler and without the third brake light and all the decals. But I'm weird that way.

Oh, I like clean... Don't get me wrong. I just feel that the decals, stripes, etc are part of the Iroc personality and identity. When you have an Iroc missing those parts, it's just a Camaro. I ran my Formula without the door call outs for a year or two. It looked clean, but also very bland. The decals gave it the look.

Re: IROC-Z California Special

I agree that the door decals/stripes/hood etc. etc. is what makes it an IROC, BUT......that being said, without all that stuff, plain and clean......man....that's slick!!!!!!! Splitting hairs as to what you wanna call it! -but ultimately, I'm an Iroc look guy, so my decals are stayin' put.
