ZZ3/ZZ4 HO Camaro Manual

ZZ3/ZZ4 HO Camaro Manual
I've seen a few scans and screenshots of this flyer around, but since I scanned a copy for safe keeping, I figured I'd share it for the other documentation junkies.
This is the GM manual explaining how to swap a GMPP ZZ3 crate motor into an LG4 or L69 thirdgen while keeping the car 100% emissions legal. The guide also should apply to the ZZ4, and in other ways virtually any later roller cam 350.
It's a 265mb PDF, scanned in glorious 600dpi high fidelity. Wooo! This stuff is PURE, uncut GM propaganda.

It's big enough that you'll have to download the file and open with Adobe Reader if you want to see it. LOL I could have made it smaller, but my intention was to have as close to a full quality digital copy as possible. In theory a person could print the PDF on glossy paper and have a copy as good as the real thing. In theory.

I didn't realized it came with poly (or whatever it is) control arm bushings. I have never experienced any wheel hop in a 3rd gen, Seemed to me the long arm to the trans pretty much eliminated that from existance. Used to drool over that kit in the early 90's & have one of those engines today, However its in a 77 Monza.

Thanks Drew, just printed it off at work.
If I knew how to work this darn printer better to make text darker, I'd make copies for anyone that needed one.
If anyone needs a NOS copy, looks like you can still get it.

I started working at a chevy dealer back in 96' in the parts department and I remember day dreaming about this for my 82'. I don't recall the price but I could get parts for 10% over dealer cost.

Re: ZZ3/ZZ4 HO Camaro Manual
The engine alone was about $3k in 1998-ish dollars. I'd expect the rest of the parts to do it up by the book would probably run another $1500 or more.
I always thought it was neat that GM tried to show penance for the LG4. The kit or more or less spelled out exactly how to make an LG4 run with the big dogs. It's just unfortunate that it wasn't more popular. I think I've only heard or one or two people ever doing the full swap. Most people would substitute heavily for various reasons. Maybe it was too little, too late, too expensive, too obscure? Certainly wish there were as many LG4 thirdgens running around with ZZ3/ZZ4 swaps as there are/were 5.0 Mustangs with the entire Ford Motorsport or SVO catalog thrown at them.

I wanted to convert my 88 Formula I had in the 90's to a ZZ HO motor so bad.

Then, the 4.9 Fox had port EFI across the board. If you want your motorsports division to sell parts, make your production vehicles use those parts instead of some years, some options, some computers.
Back to the ZZ3 & ZZ4, the 4" bore small blocks were in production over 20 years in most Chevrolet vehicles and while there are reasons to prefer a late model block, you're not going to talk a good portion of the people into a $3,000 engine when every rebuilder around the corner can put together "the same thing" for less. Even when it is really just "close enough."
As far as the "whole package," 50 state legality doesn't interest that many people, and it interested even fewer people in the 80s. Same could be said for keeping the CCC Q-jet. Look at the E-rod, or CA swaps going on in the tech forums here, or on 'tech. It is few and far between, compared to the guys looking for low-buck, easy swaps with a truck engine. And how many kept a Q-jet? I daily drove one until 2016 when the car was stolen, and it passed the smog test on the first try when it last tested. I will do a 50 state legal style swap on my next LS swap (cats were the first thing I bought, used) but I am the snowflake in the group, compared to the majority.
GM went to great effort to be 50 state legal, and I think engine swaps are a growing industry, but with AZ-registered cars, and other workarounds, fully legal swaps are still a small percentage now, and for the ZZ4.
The can of worms you opened up for me is the L69 dual snorkel I pulled from a salvage yard B-Body. Was it on top of an engine I should have investigated further?

Re: ZZ3/ZZ4 HO Camaro Manual
Cool article. I recall it well. That was when I built my own ZZ3 clone engine. Bought the ZZ3 cam, ZZ3 timing gears and chain ( big single roller), ZZ3 intake, windage tray, and so forth. I still have that engine today ... now with a few additions.
Thanks for posting.

Re: ZZ3/ZZ4 HO Camaro Manual
I always loved the ZZ3/ZZ4 350 H.O. conversion.
I still have the 93 catalogue (when the conversion debuted), which I took from my cousin who worked for GM at the time.
In 98, I used this conversion as a guide for my own build.
