88 GTA K-member factory finish

Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone had any information on what the factory finish should be on the K member of a 88 GTA. I plan on rebuilding and detailing the undercarriage of my car this winter and would like to make everything as correct as possible. I have searched through the "reference car" thread and seem to see some that are bare metal, some that are black, and some that look bare metal with black towards the ends. Unfortunately in my teenage years I had painted the K member black on my car, so I can't really play detective to figure out what finish my k member originally had. Any help if much appreciated.

Re: 88 GTA K-member factory finish

pretty sure my 90 was black, I can still see some paint on it, i'll probably have it in the air in the next week or so, and can take a closer look.

I'm also doing this as I go thru things. Check our this thread, do you see this color anywhere?

Funny, I had saved that top photo too. My Maui caught more paint on the radiator housing than his. Were these painted by people or machines?

Another point, I think my passenger side k-member near ball joint is orange. never noticed anything on driver, will have a closer look at both.

my sway bar mounts were definitely black from factory. what is that paint doing on the bump stop thing.

My stock swaybar endlinks died the same way. Yellows and the blue ones.

I'm not sure how the cars were painted, LenardS would probably have some good info about that.

If you get a chance to see the pass A-arm I'd like to know what color they used

I've never seen anything other than bare front sway bar mounts and painted rear mounts. GMs really really weird sometimes.

That's the only car I've seen with paint on the snubber. Often wondered if it was some kind of mold release compound that stayed on it randomly??

Re: 88 GTA K-member factory finish

My 92 had a black painted K-member from factory. My 88 has bare metal. Funny how these things changed trough the years.

Re: 88 GTA K-member factory finish

Must depend on the year. Here's my old 82 Z28, 22k miles. An absolute TON of bare metal parts. This car was stored in a climate controlled garage its entire life and nothing was rusty at all. For whatever reason, the rear sway bar bushings even survived and were still just fine
