History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
I was always under the impression that 87 IROC/Z28 got the odd year only shorter shifter ****. Recently saw this super low mileage car on bring a trailer and it had what I always thought was the 88-up ****. I was planning on getting my original shorter 87 **** recovered to be accurate, but the below car has me questioning what I thought was correct. Anyone have any insight?
I have an '87 Z28 and it has the longer, leather **** as seen on that yellow IROC.
I have an '87 that is an original car and it has the short shift ****. Another friend used to own a 1987 and it also had the short shift ****. His was an original car. It is possible that they used the short shift ***** till they ran out of them and then started using the longer shift ***** you see on the 1988 cars. Or they used the '87 Corvette short shift ***** till the Camaro longer shift ***** were available like you see on the '88 and up IROC. Another car that used the same short shift **** was the 1987 Corvette. I've seen them on that year Corvette.

If I recall correctly; the Seat option determined which Gear-Selector handle was used.
My 1987 IROC has the same seats as the yellow IROC on bring a trailer that is being discussed. It has the same seats with the 2 piece adjustable headrests, but has the shorter shift ****. Does anyone have a picture of an 1987 with the single back standard seats?
I guess we can start here for those that would like to figure this out. The low mileage car in question looks to have a 6/87 build with the larger ****. My 87 has a 5/87 build with the smaller one. Anyone have a car with a date after 5/87 that they can speak to about what **** came on their cars? Does any other 87 owners have the larger ****? If so, what is your manufacture date?
Ran into an original owner of a 87 with 16k miles. His had the smaller shifter with a build date of 4/87. I am really starting to wonder if maybe the yellow car had the **** swapped for one reason or another, maybe a warranty replacement for messed up leather or something. Still not seen another 87 with the larger ****.
I didn't even know the short style one was a 87' only thing. I changed mine out for one from a FWD Buick of some flavor. It was just in far better shape. Still have the original short one someplace.
Sadly, I can't read the manufacture date on my '87; it's faded at the end of the decal. I've owned the car for 31 years and it's always had the longer ****.

I believe you could figure out the build month based off the VIN.
My car has a mid 07/87 build and my car has the small shifter. Also my car is from Van Nuys.
On BaT, there's a 1400 mile white IROC-Z, build date of 11/86, custom fabric, built in Van Nuys, with short handle.

Looks like the cars with the long shift handle started in late July of 87 with the Norwood cars, as my car has a mid July '87 build, from Van Nuys, and it still has the short handle. I don't have a large enough sample from Van Nuys to compare.

What color Paint is your Car?
It looks like the Color that my 87 was originally (Black Sapphire Metallic).

Mine's a Norwood car. I recall doing some research on the sequence number and I believe it was a late '87 build.

Scott, I think your research shows your right that late July of 1987 was the start of the long shift handle. My 1987 Red IROC-Z has a build date of 06/87, built in Van Nuys, custom interior, has the short handle. It looks like they must have ran out of the short handles in late July of '87. Some Van Nuys built cars with a build date of August 1987 with the long handle would confirm your research. So, depending on the build date it could have the short or long handle and still be original.
