1987 convertible
1987 convertible
Hey guys--I've been browsing this website forever, and have seen quite a few "what is it worth" questions--so I guess it's my turn. Any help/comments would be greatly appreciated. I was trading in my Talon on another "running around" car, and the salesman and I started talking cars--Turned out to be a really cool guy who was looking for a summer toy. Well anyways, I told him that I had an 87 IROC convertible sitting in a storage shed for the last 6 years--he wanted to see it so I brought it out to him. Here are the specs: 1987 Iroc Z Convertible(flame red exterior/tan interior/black top), power locks/windows/drivers seat/tilt/cruise/leather/G92/alpine sound system--Overall the car is in great condition--it's got a bunch of SLP parts(runners/headers/exhaust/airfoil/1LEaluminum driveshaft) on the 305 TPI/5 speed combo as well as all the informative manuals that came w/ the car. He told me he was really interested and then I talked to him the next day. He said that the car was worth $8,000, but because the clutch was slipping(the car has 68,000 miles on it) and the a/c didn't work, that it was worth about $7,000 as it sat. Is this fair? I really wasn't considering selling it--but I don't have the space to keep it and I could clear up some debt, so he has me really thinking about this. Like I said-any help would be greatly apperciated--sorry so long...........
Being that spring is coming, I'm sure you could ask for more... $8000, maybe $8500... let someone talk you down a bit. 68K on an '87... that's pretty damn good. Don't overlook the fact that you were talking to a salesman who may have an interest in the car... not that he'd lie outright, but he makes his living dealing with cars. I'm sure he wouldn't offer $7000 if he didn't think it would be worth more to him. I'm not saying he's bs'ing you or anything... but a good salesman will always try to make a little cash, no matter what. If you really want to sell, I'd ask a bit more than you honestly think it's worth, and give yourself some room to come down. With our kinds of cars, condion and demand have a big say in the $ value, and that makes it possible to sometimes get more than 'blue book' for them. These cars are the stuff that testosterone-charged dreams are made of.... no one dreams of owning a caravan. Just my two cents worth.....

An 87 convertable with tpi, g92, 5-speed, option level #3, leather, etc. Is fairly uncommon. The market for these cars is bad right now. I'd hang on to the car if I were you.

I agree with Scott and as i stated before, I'd keep the car. Your dealing with a car salesman, he may drive the car for a while, but he's also looking at making money. He can buy that car for 8k, drive it for the summer, put it on his lot for say 11,995, very rare, low miles, etc. i wouldn't sell it to him.

The 87 model isn't considered a classic or collectible either. Only the convertible is. They are starting to look at certain cars and their potential rarity and including them in the collector pricing. My 86 442 isn't in there and there was only 4200 made.
