About to order Carpet : ) need last min. advice
I have been dealing with Car motor sports... and im not sure of this whole backing deal. SHould i get standard backing or rubber. Did original carpet have rubber. I dont want to pay 400 bucks.
heres the priced. Im getting ultra premium definintly

Stock had rubber backing which was destructive if water ever got behind it
I got a complete set of ebay from A1Auto - $250ish i cant remember
Most people swear by it, I think it looks good unless you know what your looking for then theres some irregularities and misdyed threads
Fitment was good but could have been better. Its cut oversize so you can trim it down to perfect fit
Only precut hole was for the shifter and it needed to be trimmed larger

Axle/Gears: Yeah, some of those too.
I got the ACC carpet from A1Auto for my 87 Formula as well and I am very pleased with it. Mine fits good and looks great. Unless you are restoring a rare model and want to be "concorse" grade I would save the extra money and go with them....I am very picking and was not dissapointed at all. I would give the kit a strong 9 on looks and fit and a 10 on value.
On a side note as stated above none of the holes were pre-cut and it was a small pain to install but not that bad.

Jim85IROC sells the same carpet as Car motorsports and he can do a little better on the price of the non rubber backed stuff, IIRC

I got the rubber backing when I ordered from CM, and am glad I did. My factory carpet had the rubber backing, and this was a pretty close match to it. Downside is that the carpet is heavier, upside is that it is a bit more insulation and may help reduce noise.
As for the water issue, it should not get wet in the first place. If it does on a regular basis, such as a daily driver, then you would be better off without the backing as it will retain the dampness behind it.
The ultra premium is definately a step up from the more commonly available ACC stuff. I got samples of both (from different suppliers to make sure) before I purchased and the difference is obvious when comparing them side by side. The ultra premium from CM is denser and thicker.

I got the one from Hawks, it was the same as my stock carpet as far as material. They however did not cut any holes in it. Incidently, I cut too much off near the center console down by the feet, but I patched it.
