VHT makes a vinyl dye, it eats into the plastic sorta like self etching primer. It is not completely flake resistance but man it is strong. Even if you scratch it, the scratch is just the color of the dye.
might be better to get the black parts used from somewhere. The painted stuff wont look as good and no matter what you use or prep time it will at some point come off.look at the cost of both ways then decide.

I used Dupli-Color vinyl and fabric coating to change some grey plastic and vinyl parts to black. Looks good and so far has held up great.

Yeah, I gave the Krylon treatment to my gray gauge bezel. Its held up so far. I used medium gloss so it wont be too shiny and blends in well...

I've used almost every plastic paint imaginable. By far the best is the SEM paint. The color and reflectivity are a perfect match for unpainted ABS plastic. Duplicolor and Plastikote both make a good paint too, but it goes on a tad thicker and not quite as smooth, so you lose a bit of detail. By far the worst I've used is that Krylon crap. It might stick well, but it goes on a foot thick and is way too shiny.

I used this stuff and I must say it worked awesome. I have also used the SEM stuff and I would never go back to it. You can find the Dupli-color almost at any autoparts store and they have a great selection of different colors.

I used krylon plastic paint just the other day because I"m doing the same as you, and I think it turned out real well. I used satin black and it looks like the plastic was originally black, not gray. I prepped the plastic well (used rubbing alcohol) and sprayed 1 very light tack coat, and 2 or 3 (can't remember) regular coats. I didn't think it went on too thick, I just moved the can faster to make sure the coats were thin. I am very pleased with the result.

well zee28 said to just get the black parts but I dont have the time or money to look for and purchase mint condition black plastics so for now Ill go with the fifteen dollars in spray paint.
Im just trying to find a paint or dye that works well and will not just come off when i lean or it or if my car sits in the sun in the summer or if something hard hits it like keys. If it sticks well and has a good color to it ill use it. Also it doesnt have to "match" any peices there all getting paint so nobody will know. If its a little shinier then it'll just look like I armoraled everything. I'd also like to do the vynil on my door panels but im scared of making that look like ****. What paint or dye has anyone used on that. also pic would be great so I can see the results of the product.

Duplicolor Vinyl/Plastic gloss black worked well for me after a couple months. The only part that isn't "perfect" is the door sill panel. Its scuffed up from my shoes smacking into it every time I get in which is no big deal. I need to see if I can clean it off. Even if the paint has worn off (which I doubt) its no big deal to take it off and hit it with another coat real quick.
Note that it gives a finish way more glossy than OEM. It always looks like it has "armor all" on it. You will have to decide for yourself if you like this or not. I did my entire battered 170k interior with this stuff. I'd highly recomend it. For a daily driver, it looks good. REAL good. Very cheap too. I probably used about 4 or 5 cans for everything.

***The only parts NOT painted in this pic are the dash itself, and the shifter plate. They stick out like a sore thumb.***

That's way too glossy for those who want a stock appearance, and I can see that on the smooth surface of the hexagon pattern that there's an orange-peel buildup because of the thickness of the paint. This is exactly the type of results I got from the Krylon Fusion, though now they seem to have a satin that would likely be better.
The SEM Landau Black won't give you that artificial glossy look. With a little bit of work, you can make the SEM look completely identical to the factory plastic.

i dont like a high gloss finish really. So a satin is definately a better choice or i might try a semi-flat. I forgot where i saw it or who sold it but im going to start looking for it again. its supposed to be a finish between semi-gloss and flat so ill try that on a door sill if i can find it to see how it turns out

Would someone please post SEM paint to the originals? Where can you get SEM at? Price? Color options?
I've been monitoring this topic for a while as I need a whole new make over of my pieces.
Thanks,

I bought my last batch of SEM online. Auto paint supply stores usually carry it. SEM has awesome customer service. You can call or email them through there site to ask any questions about their product or for a local retailer in your area. I bought mine on Ebay, but other places like Eastwood sell it also.
All I have are some crappy pics of the Chevelle dash I painted with Landua Black, but it might give you an idea of that color....

Allright. I got a question. What happens to the paint if you do use armor all on it. Will it rub off or fade. I need to do just a few parts. And that SEM stuff seems to fit the bill. Thanks. Adam :-)
