Speedometer Cable Removal
Speedometer Cable Removal
Hey yall:
I'm having a helluva time trying to remove my speedometer so I can change out my high beam indicator bulb. I simply cannot get the speedometer cable to disconnect from the back of the instrument panel. There's no room to get my hand in there, and I've already popped the little spring clip off the groove of the cable, so I can't figure out why it's still hooked up.
Is there some trick to pull the cable off? I have all my panels below the dash there pulled off, but there's just no room to get my hand in.
I've looked everywhere and the only insight are little blurbs that say "remove speedometer cable" but give me no direction on how to do it.
I have an 89 Camaro RS, automatic. Speedometer's on the left, tach is on the right, with the oil, temp, and fuel gauges in the middle in the shape of ^
Thanks for your help!
Nick

I'm assuming you've removed the 2 10mm bolts(more like speed nuts) from the lower right and left of the cluster. The spring has to be pushed toward the speedometer.Try using a long shaft screwdriver to depress the spring.Once you get the spring to release the cable fron the speedometer you should be able to pull the cluster out.You maybe able to turn the cluster to get to the indicator socket also.
Edit: Pardon my manners welcome to TGO.

Thanks for the welcome. I never thought to pull on the gauge itself. I was still trying to remove the whole panel. I'll give it a shot tomorrow and hop back on here if I have anymore issues. Thanks for the quick reply!!

First of all, is the cluster itself loose and unfastenend? It's pretty easy to tell, you should have about 1 to 2 inches of play before the speedo cable holds it back.
-assuming it's loose, just use a long flathead screwdriver to push the clip/spring release thingy on the speedo cable while having someone pull on the cluster. I've done this so many times I can do it with my eyes closed, but a second set of hands to pull the cluster out while you're under the dash really helps!!!

Heh, good luck getting it back in. Im running with no speedo and lights, as well as no gas or blinker indicators. This just happened today as I was putting my dash back in, and the kid in the car told me the lights were on and things were fine, so I screwed the battery back up and took it out of the shop...0 mph! Too lazy to unscrew it for now and try to refit it back in, but the hookups are a, well, pain in the butt.
