Re: roll cage

I recently had a 6 point roll bar custom made by one of my co-worker friends that has his own welding and fabrication shop on the side. I will try to get some pics on here soon. He did an awesone job and it is legal. We just need to finish it up by installing the swingout kits in both sidebars.

I can't seem to find a any of my 3rd gen pics! so here are some of my 4th.
I will be stripping the whole car down again and will have the roll bar changed to a 12point cage.

Re: roll cage

antosh,

Its very dangerous driving with a cage in your car on the street. If you do get into an accident, God forbidding, you'll hit your head on the cage and that doesn't end up well. They run them on the track with helmets. You could use some creativity if your welder knows the proper techniques. Keep these concepts in mind when you make your decision.

Re: roll cage

6 point would be fine on the street since your head can't go back that far with a 5 point harness on tight. If it's street driven I wouldn't do a 10 point due to it crushing your skull without a helmet in a side impact.

If you look at mine it is very hard to hit your head on anything. Rule book says side bars have to be between shoulder and elbow. And there is a rule about where the hoop is but I can't remeber? with a 10 or a 12 I can we that happen. My 4pt sparco harrness and Sparco seats keep me save.

I Know my roll bar is a little crazy with all those bars but it was going to be a 12pt but my fab guy had to leave town(racing) last minute and I was in a hurry to get to the wiring guy. Still "best deal ever for $1500 chromemoly roll bar with fuel door, painted, nitrous bottle brakets, and removed gas tank and lots of extra factory steel. Oh and the whole roll bar is measured in front of me to be within 1/8" same everywhere!

And so everyone knows a 4pt or a 6pt is a ROLL BAR.
And when there are bars over head and down the a-piller it is a CAGE.

Re: roll cage

I agree if done properly you can avoid hitting your head but definitely keep that in mind when your routing your cage. You don't want to hurt yourself on something that supposed to keep you safe! Yes you would want to take advantage of your bar/cage by getting the 5points. Do you have sfc?

Re: roll cage

yea i wasnt going to plan out anything crazy and i know the dangers of it but the real reason is i want to be able to get some racing seats and then be able to get a harrness in there and use it the correct way
and thanks for your opinions

Re: roll cage

thats funny about the whole bashing your head on a bar. but i mean if that bar isnt there youll most likely smash your skull into the roof or something anyways. and not to mention they do make pads that go around the bars. you can get them from summit, they got all kinds of colors also. so how exactly does a harness strap on a racing seat without a rollcage? do they bolt to the floor? wrap around the seat? and how effective is a roll cage? say in a collision or a car being flipped? jus wondering if anyone really knows the truth. thanks guys.

How safe is a CAGE?<-- I say very safe as the weakest part of a f-body is the front windsheld. And a cage protects that, however a roll bar doesn't. And roll bars is what we are talking about here.

The two works get thrown around so much that many people don't know the difference! and there is a world of difference.

Re: roll cage

So at what point do you need a 10 point cage? I have an ls1 pushing about 400 horse, and a 200-300 shot of nitrous. I haven't taken it to the track because I think I would get kicked out, if they even let me run. I want to do a 10 point, but I have a-pillar gauges. Anyone have any ideas?
