Post a picture of your camera mount

Ok, I autocross and I want to make some videos but I don't know how I should mount the camera. I was looking at the suction cup mounts but that would mean I would have to put it on a flat surface like a window or some place outside the car. I always have the side windows down and I don't want anything on the windsheild because it will block my view. I also don't want it outside the car because I would still like to make some videos even if it is raining. So, please post pictures of your camera mounts to give me some ideas.

I was looking at Stephen's camera mount and I really like his idea but I'm afraid I might damage the camera if I hit a cone while I'm racing.

I've also heard of many people with roll cages using some exhaust clamps to attach the camera to one of the bars. However, I do not ever plan on installing a roll cage in my car, so that wont really work for me.

Instead, I was wondering if I could use some exhaust clamps to make a mount which would attach my camera to the rear sun shade. Do you think that would be stable enough? Would it ruin the sun shade? Has anyone else tried this before?

Once again, any pictures of your camera mounts are greatly appreciated.
Mike

This probably isn't a huge help, but pretty much all cameras have a threaded hole on the bottom, for tripod mounting. I believe it's 1/4" X 20 thread, if you're wanting to make a bracket.

If you unscrew your antenna the threaded hole in the bottom of the camera will screw directly on to the antenna mount. It's still outside the car, but it's in a safe place that wont hit a cone or anything else.

Stephen showed me this one day after he had made the mounting bracket.

Yes, but I'm gona try it o my camera. It was a thought, but my camera mount is way to one side, so 95% of the weight of the camera would be hanging off to one side.

As for my mount....It was dead center on the nose. If you hit a cone dead center....You mighta wanna consider hanging up your racing shoes. I've never seen anyone hit a cone that dead center.

Clip it with a front corner or on the door....cornering too close, yeah.

You've obviously never been to some of the same events I have

Personally, I've seen the stick pod thing used wik great results. Unless you live in Seattle, I'm not sure if rain would be a great concern of mine. Even then, I'm sure you can buy or rig a bag to cover the camera.
I wonder if you can suction mount it to the rear hatch, tho I'm not sure if the mount would turn 180* Even wik it mounted on the windshield, passenger side, I don't think it should really be in your line of sight, besides you should be looking way up and ahead. And worse case, sacrifice a run for the sake of ART!! On a side note, unless the event is using airport sized pylons, a camera mounted halfway up on the door should not be in any contact with a cone.

To answer your original question, I doubt the sunshade would be stable enough.

Re: Post a picture of your camera mount

  • I know I shouldn't be hitting cones right in the middle of my front bumper, but I have seen many people loose it and go straight into a wall of cones (I only did it once... brakes locked up when I was racing my Dad's truck).
  • I know I should be looking ahead, but I still want as much window to look out of as possible.
  • I know mounting it higher on the doors with a suction mount should be ok, but I don't want it on a door because I have seen too many people hit a cone and have it do a couple flips right along side their car.
Mounting it on the hatch glass isn't a bad idea, I just wonder if my camera can zoom in enough so people don't have to look at the inside of my car... not that it looks bad.

Why don't you think it would be stable enough? Do you think it would sag? I have a bunch of little metal rods (about 1/4" diameter) that I can use to make supports for it.

Re: Post a picture of your camera mount

I finally took the camera out to my car and took a couple pictures with it in different areas. Turns out mounting it on the sunshade wont be a good spot. My shoulders and helmet take up a lot of the view and there is huge glare off the windshield.

How much do suction mounts go for?
