so i finally was able to pick this option up. apparently only 900 1987 iroc,s came with these mine was missing and i looked up the rpo codes and turns out i was one of the lucky ones. this mirror was considered luxury back in 87 and i dont even see them now adays on cars. so problem is i have no idea how to work it. what does the distance dial do. seems like when i adjust when i get in, the motor moves it all around when i drive, and sets it in a wierd place the next day. maybe just an explination on how it operates and i will figure it out. cause im lost with the dial numbers?
The dial numbers are for gauging the distance between you and the vehicle behind you. It is what the mirror uses to judge how much to move the mirror. I also have that mirror in my IROC but for some reason it doesn't work.

why does it move around in the daytime. sunlight?? now i know when you put your car into reverse the mirror shuts off. so if i set the mirror where i like it in the day time when its in reverse it should hold it there until some car gets close on my tail???
There should be an off switch so you can turn it off during the day so the sunlight wont affect it. Maybe it moves during the day because of light reflecting off other objects around the car. The mirror recognizes the glare as headlight beams and moves to avoid them. I didn't even know reverse affected the mirror... that's odd.

DD8- features a motor driven mirror that moves up and down supposedly to the glare and distance of the vehicle behind you. ill get a picture later on this evening
There is a sensor in front of the mirror and behind. When it's darker in front than in the rear, the mirror adjusts to compensate for the brighter light behind you. During the day, this will happen if the sensitivity dial is set too sensitive. When putting the car in reverse, it sets itself to normal so that you can see behind you clearly. I have mine set at 5.
When I got mine, it did not work either. I found the motor wasn't working. I obtained a mirror from a friend in Michigan that had a working motor, but the glass was damaged. I took the two mirrors apart and soldered the motor into my mirror. It has worked ever since.
The best way to test the mirror is to place your hand over the sensor at the windshield and shine a light at the sensor facing the passenger compartment. After a few seconds, the mirror will adjust if the motor works.

but back in 1987 that mirror was light years ahead of everything haha my jeep a 2001 still has to be flipped manual. these cars are special in more ways then one. scott i appreciate your help very much. i know now what is going on lol thanks man
These auto dimming/distance mirrors were also used in a few other gm vehicles besides camaro/firebird.Ive seen them in cadillacs and olds trofeos.I currently have 5 of them.Three of them have working motors and the other two dont work.There is a thread on here somewhere that tells you how to repair these mirrors
Looks like I have the DD8 option too. My mirror itself is the standard one in my car. I replaced it because the other mirror looked pretty crappy. If someone can post pics of this mirror front and back that would be great. I would like to replace mine to the appropriate one.
