Will a 4th gen trunk trim swap into my 3rd gen??

Hey Guys,

Does anyone know if the plastic trim pieces in the trunk interior from a 4th gen Firebird could be swapped into my 87 Trans Am without modification, and if not what type of modification would be necessary? The seats in the car came from a 2000 and were a direct bolt in however I know the dash, door panels etc require some modification so I wasn't sure how the trunk trim would work out.

In case you guys were wondering, I'm looking into doing the sound system in my car. While it would be cool to put subs or something in the car I've always been hesitant to loose the trunk well or take up any of the already limited space. I came across a company that makes nice stealth enclosures (they're similar to this but I don't think this is the right website http://www.subthump.com/acamarostealth.htm) and i thought it might be easier, if its possible, to swap in 4th gen trunk trim. On that note, any suggestion on stealth enclosures?

I'm pretty sure its not a direct swap, but it doesn't look like it would be hard, probably a few cuts here and there...

Having owned both generations I can tell you that it would be next to impossible to swap over.

The trunks are physically different in size and shape, the postion of the lock mechanism ect... it take more than a few cuts here and there. By the time your done you would have been better off fabricating panels out of fiberglass from scratch.

Someone here did it...or was in the process of doing it. They had most of the panels swapped in. It was not easy. Takes lots of modifications. The dash and door panels are easy compared to the plastics from what i remember. Search around...you'll find a couple threads on it.

Just look in the hatch of a 4th gen and you'll see how different it is. It's more rounded in the corners, where as ours is pretty much square, with a little rounding in the corners. also, on the 4th gens, there isn't really a rear hatch panel (the piece on our cars that covers the latch), it's just a piece of molded carpet.

Anything can be done, just depends how bad you want to do it. A guy awhile back widened his stock hatch panels to accomodate a mini-tub job. They look great.

Here is a link to a thread where someone was starting to fit panels. As far as I know, he's still active around here, so maybe shoot him a message to see if he ever followed through with the interior project.

And another thread with two different pics from him in it.
