paint to use for interior

Forgive me if this has been covered (which i'm sure it has but search is useless any more. it found every thread with the word interior in it..) I just need to know what kind of paint to use to paint the plasitcs in my interior. I'm wanting to change from grey to saddle leather tan/black and get my seats redone to match.

I too would like to know this. I just have always assumed the Autozone stuff would be low quality.

I'm wanting it too look as close to factory colored as possible. I've seen interiors that were painted like blue and white and you could tell it was normal spray paint or at most paint for a modle car.. i'm thinking I may sand it up and then get some thin stain and try to dye it then use a flat clear coat of some kind.. will start doing some more research.

I'm about to do my interior over (same color, but a refinish) and bought SEM interior plastic paint. I bought it at a specialty auto body parts shop, but am sure it is available elsewhere. If you search Youtube, type in SEM and/or interior plastic painting etc. I found a company that showed how to make a brand new console lid cover tan, from the original black.

Re: paint to use for interior

from what i've been reading, sand the surface a bit using 1500grit sandpaper, then clean it with detergent, dry it and wipe it down with rubbing alchohol or mineral spirits, to remove any left over residue, then use a plastic primer, let it dry then use small over laping layers of your chosen color. Some places said normal spraypaint would work fine, i personaly would (and am) going to use modle car paint of good quality (from a real hobby store not walmart or somthing.) then after about 5-6 layers of my color I'm going to go over it with a clear flat laqure or the same color flat laqure for durability.

I'm going to try and start working on this this week but we'll have to see how work goes.

Re: paint to use for interior

I would second the use of SEM-brand interior dyes. If you're just looking to touch up the black plastics, I've had really good luck using Krylon Fusion dyes.

Make sure the plastics have been cleaned down with dish soap and water beforehand. You'd be surprised at the amount of gunk and film has built up over the years.
