ball style shift-**** (auto)
I was wondering if anyone had the parts breakdown for an 85 camaro v8 auto for the shifter. When I bought the car, the plastic that feeds through the shifter assembly to the lock was broken in the bottom of the button. The leather **** itself sits at the bottom of the shaft because it too is either broken, or I dont know the correct positioning of the c-clip within the ball. I have been pushing on a painful piece of plastic to put it in gear for over a year. Once I bust out the new t-top seals this spring, I am putting a new interior in, and this shifter **** is first on my list.
Gm parts catalog was useless, and most of the shifters I see at the junkyards are the T-handle type. I want to remain original. Part numbers please?
Thank you, let me know if you need any more info on my part, or want to point me in the right direction

Re: ball style shift-**** (auto)
So - the "painful piece" that you are now pushing - is that what you need?
If so, I see them on ebay every so often. I would also think it's the same between the ball shifter of the earlier years, and the square (for lack of a better description) shifter of the later years, so you might check into that as well.

Re: ball style shift-**** (auto)
yes, where it ends is broken, the remaining length seems glued into the button itself (which i can find no problem)
I took a square firebird stick apart at the junkyard, but it has a bendable shaft with ***** every so often. so i think there are different models. (maybe we can narrow it down to a part number?)
Also, I would like to know what it takes to at least mount the ball in the right spot. I suspect inside my ball where the c-clip goes is busted up, but maybe im looking at things wrong.
Ive searched all night and its amazing how much reproduction parts are made for the interior of these cars, yet unless you have the "t" type handle you are s.o.l

Re: ball style shift-**** (auto)
I have a shifter assembly that came out of an 86 camaro I will ship to you for $20. So it should be the part you are looking for. my 86 has the ball type. I got it from a guy I bought a nose from and he threw it in for free, I don't need it. Let me know.

Also, there is a guy on here who is selling the ball **** too. Look in the posts for "hard to find items". It's a week or so old, he wants $25 for it I think.

Re: ball style shift-**** (auto)
If it were me, I'd get the square one for the moment, and keep an eye on ebay for the round one:

I thought all the shifters had the pushrod with the little ***** on the plastic, so that it slides easily up and down the inside of the shaft - this one's expensive, but I'd see if the local boneyard had one to try:

Re: ball style shift-**** (auto)
The shifter **** should have a metal retainer (tab) that keeps it from dropping down like that. The tab fits into one of the slots along the side of the shifter shaft. Once it's in place a snap ring keeps it from pulling off and then the center button fits over the plastic piece that is pictured in the center of the shaft.
Here's a close up of the shifter with the slots.

The retainer should be visible here:

I've seen one that the tab wasn't visible but still locked in place at the right height to install the snap ring.
There are a few different types of round *****:

And different types of buttons depending on the inside of the shifter ****:

I personally don't like the square style I recall it jamming/sticking sometimes but I forgot why.

Re: ball style shift-**** (auto)
Didn't allow enough pics, but here's one more style:

Another shaft:

You might be able to use the T style handle as well. I swapped out a T handle from a corsica or something for a while but I had to modify it to get it to fit.
This is from a Firebird, it uses a U shaped clip instead of a snap ring:

Sorry, I don't have part numbers, hope the info can help though.

Oh, in the pics you can see the two metal tabs on the button, they go on either side of the plastic piece on the shaft. The button just slides off if you pull on it. Then you can see the snap ring, you may need a flashlight though.

Re: ball style shift-**** (auto)
Also, the two styles of round ***** are not interchangeable without modification. The earlier ***** have two internal tabs, while the later ones have just one tab. IIRC, the ***** that use the taller button are the ones with two internal tabs. If you don't come up with something, I should be able to help you out. I think I have every style of shifter and ****.

Re: ball style shift-**** (auto)
I will have my uncle unlock the barn later this week so I can steal the shifter out of the car and figure out whats broke and whatnot.
My neighbor is a machinist, we were talking about recreating the cheap nylon stick in metal, then buying a new button if the ball is fine.
Ill keep you posted.

Re: ball style shift-**** (auto)
You shifter ball has to be missing the metal tab(s) inside.Thats what holds it up on the shift lever. If it was there it would not be able to slide down to the bottom of the lever

Re: ball style shift-**** (auto)
Okay, I think ive found a bulletproof solution. I was going to ask my neighbor to machine up a metal rod to replace the metal/ plastic one i have. Well, this weekend i came across a 2nd gen camaro shifter assembly. It has the same rectangular rod down the center as mine, just a bit longer. ( AND METAL!!
)
I am going to break mine where the plastic meets metal and weld this new one in. Also, my ball isnt broken, I bought snap pliers and managed to lock it in place. And from looking at other camaros I have a bucket full of buttons. I am going to tackle this the next time I'm home for the weekend, Ill keep everone posted.

Re: ball style shift-**** (auto)
I think the snap ring got lost between the kitchen, garage, or basement that holds the ball on. what size is it / do you think I could go to lowes for something like this?

Re: ball style shift-**** (auto)
im looking for an aftermarket shifter to replace my ball shifter with auto trans in an '86 iroc-z. Anybody have experience trying this; whats the most painless aftermarket shifter to install? Im kind of going for a red and black interior theme, i even got the turn signals to flash red instead of green, lol.
