Can someone please enlighten me?

Ive called about 5 different tint places so far. Im mainly looking for places that use laser cut/3M tint, not the cheap stuff thats gonna turn purple in a few months.
2 out of the 5 places ive called said they cant do it because of a 92 Camaro's rear window defrosters. Ok? Whats this about?
One place said theyre gonna have to charge $220 BECAUSE of the rear window! Another place said $180. Some shady place near me even said $150. Whats the deal? Whats so hard about tinting windows on our cars?

Yeap, that happened to me just recently. The reason, according to them, is because of the shape of the hatch glass that kinda forms an "S" shape and makes installing a little more difficult. Also, some places will install the tint in parts (not recommend) and others will do it in one piece but will cost more. The place I'm going to install the rear tint will add a vinal covering at the top and sides of the hatch with a one-piece tint.

One other tint installer was very honest and told me that he will not install camaro tints for the hatch for the same "S" shaped glass reason and didn't feel to comfortable doing it.

I got a price of $165 for all the windows from D-Tronics here in South Texas which is about what other places have said as well. Oh, if you have an existing tint on your car, be prepared to pay about $100 more just to remove the old tint. Ouch!! But I know why cuz I just removed the front ones and in the process of removing the back. It is very hard especially if your tint has been in place for 11 years!

So, I removed the front tint and will hopefully remove the back this weekend and save me $100. See my thread on https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...-off-tint.html for tips on removing tint if your need to.

So, basically, that's the price you are going to face for camaros wether their reasons are valid of not.

I haven't heard about laser cut /3M tint and why it could not be done over the defroster. This is news to me.

The tint that will become purple is the crap you buy in auto parts stores or walmart. That type of tint bubbles because the idiots who install that at home don't do it right as well. The tint provided by most tinters have warranties and they will not turn purple. I had my rear hatch done with no issues. The whole car only costed me $190 and wasn't an issue. They didn't shy away from the rear hatch. Best pic I could come up with at the moment.

Yeah the best price for laser cut tint as $180. Now theres a place literally a block away and use laser cut also, but want to charge me $220. Which is crazy because my brother went there and got 5% all around (including the windshield) on his Tahoe and didnt even pay $200.
I could go to a regular tint shop and have them do it by hand for around $150. I guess thats the best I can really get
Of course some other stuff comes up every time I get some extra money for tint. Now I need a new battery and an oil change lol

Oh another thing! My rear defrosters dont even work! Im not sure if theyre just not wired right or what, but I could have my car on for the longest time and my rear defrosters just refuse to defrost. Its not that big of a deal since they only fog up when it rains but still, itd be nice to have working defrosters. Any ideas?

Compu-cut tint only gets you so far. It gets the basic outline down, but it's still up to the installer to make the finished product look good. Take a look at your hatch and you'll see it's a compound curve. There's no way to simply cut a flat piece of tint and have it fit perfectly. What that means, is the installer has to heat shrink the tint to make it match the contour of the window. It's a time consuming job. With a rear defroster it's just that much more complicated. An average price for a professional job (flawless) is around $150-200. I talked a buddy into doing my 84 beater Camaro for $100 a few years ago and he was pissed for months. After that I had him do a 1980 Malibu 4 door and a 1986 Mustang notchback that he never said a word about. Shop around a bit, and go with your gut. If you think you it's not worth it, try ordering the precut tint and doing the job yourself. I'd be willing to bet after trying you wouldn't feel as bad about paying the shop to do the job for you.

Well thats one way to look at it lol. Im no professional tinter so id MUCH rather just pay the extra buck to get it done right. I just think its crazy that everyone charges so much but it seems $150 is the best ill get. This was just a phone estimate, they might not even know what theyre getting into, they might wanna charge more haha.
Ill keep on the lookout for some other shops and just ask around for better prices. Thanks for the answers though, I didnt think the rear would be such a mission to tint.

Re: Can someone please enlighten me?

Well like I said, I took my car to the people who told me $150 and it went up to $200 lol. I found a good place though that knows what theyre doing and told me around $160 depending on my glass. I was told to go check my rear window and look for etched letters or something to see if the glass if the original GM or an aftermarket one. Then the owner explained the reason why the glass is so hard to tint because of curves in the glass you really wouldnt even notice.

Anyone know where I could find this lettering on my glass? Its dark out now so ill be checking tomorrow anyway.
