gauge upgrade question

hey every one,
I am wanting to upgrade my gauges here real soon due to my speedo sometimes does not work, oil gauge fluctuates a lot and lighting is not that great.
my question before I get any gauges is I want the auto meter c2 gauges when I get these the speedomter has a built in odometer which looks to be digital I have a 92 camaro rs 305 tbi which looks like a mechanical odometer will that affect hooking the odometer up.
Also I know that it is against the law to tamper with the odometer so is this the same as tampering I want to make sure the milage on the new odometer is going to read the same that is on the factory and work as well.
does any one have any experience with doing this.
also I have been told that when you do something like this you have to send certain documents in showing all the information on the odometer reading and why it has been replaced I live in texas is this true.
I just want to do this as legal as I can I do not ever plan on selling this car but if it does come up one day I want it to be legal and correct for the buyer.

Re: gauge upgrade question

I wouldn't worry about it to much if your speedo does not work all the time I'm assuming your odometer doesn't work all the time either (at least mine doesn't) so technically it is already an unknown mileage car. And if you never plan on selling the car anyway there's really no reason it would come up. But if you do sell it I would be real honest about everything that happened if you're worried about it. Also I don't think it's a huge deal on older cars as long as you're no claiming it to be a 5 mile car or something like that. I would just do what you're gonna do and not worry to much about it.

I have all new guages in my car including a new speedometer. I dont think there is anyway to make the new guage read what your old one did. I'm not sure exactly how it happened, but the title to my car reads excempt under mileage.

Re: gauge upgrade question

that is a really nice setup you have there engine and interior.
I'm not sure about my title yet I bought the car a week ago from my uncle and he is hunting down the title which of coarse if he can't find it we will have to go to the dmv but that's another story.
do you mind me asking are your speedo and tach 5" there and also did you build that cluster yourself that is how I wanted to do mine I found one cluster for the 90-92 model but dont want to spend close to 200 for that since the gauges are going to cost around 800 or more that's at least through jegs.com I have not found any where cheaper.

Re: gauge upgrade question

Yeah my speedo and tach are 5" ones and I did build the cluster myself. I made it out of 1/2" project board and then covered the entire thing (before putting the guages in) in fiberglass resin. The reasoning was to seal it so that moisture would not get into the wood and so that I could sand it down nice and smooth before painting. Then I made little brackets to attach it to the factory mounting holes.

Re: gauge upgrade question

alright thanks for the info on that gives me more of an idea of how to build it I was thinking of just using steel and painting that but this is another idea that might work better

Re: gauge upgrade question

The steel will work as well. My brother has an 85 TA that he put all custom guages in and he used steel for his. Personally though I would use aluminum if you wanted to use metal.

I think after a certain number of years in certain states they will have mileage exempt I'm unsure I've just read that from other posts

Re: gauge upgrade question

Hi, not saying it's a better idea or anything, but I have a cluster from a 91 or 92 305 TBI that I swapped out with the one in my own car to check, and it all works perfect. $45 plus shipping. Just thought I'd offer, didn't mean to intrude. It's got 163122 miles on it
