Firebird overhead console

Hey I got a question. Will the overhead console on a 87 Trans Am fit on a 89 GTA? I'd rather replace my overhead headliner with that instead.

Yes it will fit as long as they are both T-tops or both hardtops.

There are six ( I believe ) T studs that you will need to secure the console. Easy if you have those.

There are four of the special bolts, but they should already be present if he's removing the console from another car.

Re: Firebird overhead console

This is the item I was talking about.
http://m.ebay.com/itm/251706081970?nav=WATCHING_ACTIVEhttp://m.ebay.com/itm/370970102356?nav=WATCHING_ACTIVEWill I need to cut my headliner to fit it in? I need to replace my headliner anyways, but I wanted to know beforehand. Also my car has T Tops so will it work with my car? Reason I ask is I have seen cars with t-tops that have the very same center console.

Re: Firebird overhead console

Yes the head liner needs to be cut for it. There were two differant consoles, one for hardtops and one for t-tops (i believe the hardtop versions had a slight curve to them. As long as youre going from t-top to t-top you should be fine.

Ok... Well I guess I need to find the right console first then.

Re: Firebird overhead console

The pics work if you are logged in, but even if they didn't, the text has useful information like the difference in mounting slot positions.

IIRC the T-Tops also require the additional piece in the pic below.

What IS that piece in the bottom of the photo? I've never seen that before.

It should be explained in the link blacksunshine'91 posted. I think it was used on the T-Top version for additional support. -Actually it might be the other way around. It's been a while since I dealt with it.

Here is the link that explains it:

This is what your headliner looks like with the OH Console.

Re: Firebird overhead console

I have done this mod. To do it, you need the console, wiring pigtail, and mounting studs. You will need to cut your overhead liner to fit the console (there is a tech article or google it). The holes for the mounting studs are (should) already be in the roof structure. Simply screw the studs into the holes. Wire up the pigtail, mount, ad your done.

Now, if you wanna get real schnazzy, get a garage door opener out of a 2000 Coupe De Ville. Fits perfectly in the spot for the flashlight. I have done this also.

I remember that. That Homelink unit is self contained, right? You are just bringing it power and ground?

Re: Firebird overhead console

yup. Orange wire (I think) is constant hot, then black to ground. Done. It is kinda awkward reaching behind you to open the garage door, but you get used to it.

Make sure you get the right Homelink. They have red or amber lights, and which one to use depends on your garage door. The amber is the "rolling code".

I have the Homelink in my OHC - which I installed in a 96 Firebird.

Well the garage door opener would be nice if I had a garage to put the car in. Only have a driveway here.
