Took my Formula 350 on nice 2 hour round trip today, it was GREAT!! Howver as I came home I noticed my steering column is loose. Right where the adjustable steering joint is. See pic below. Anyway I can grab the steering wheel and make it move around freely in any direction, and its getting a bit worse when I play with it. Something is either loose or worn out. Before I tear it down just wanted some input. I have rebuilt this same column back in 1990 but I dont remember all the parts, etc. thanks.
So this is called the steering wheel wobble. I just order a pin pulling tool so I can get in there and tighten the 4 bolts. Found info here and in a google search.
Hi Hawkeye1980 , this is the best on line tutorial I've found regarding our steering column , I used it to rebuild mine when the "Stub shaft" went bad ....
PS , page 14 is where the bolts your after are addressed .

YEARS ago, say 1990 I had a 1971 CJ-5 I did a complete restomod on. One as a Saginaw power steering conversion. I used this same column in the that conversion. I had to rebuild the upper half and all this is coming back to me. I even have most of the tools need to fix this. I remember thinking I had to keep these tools if I ever had to fix another column..Especially on my fairly new 1989 Formula 350 back then. Here I am...31 year later.
Yes, common problem and not that hard to fix. It's been a while since I've done one as well, but if I recall correctly, the only special tools you need are a steering wheel puller, lock ring compressor and pivot pin puller. Use some locktite on the 4 bolts so they don't back out again.

Yes I have most of those already. When I get to it I will update. thanks!
Well its pretty much done. The big connector at the bottom of the column got wedged up and i have to pull it out. But the wobbling has been fixed. used Red loctite. My 4 screws were mail torx, not female torx. I had 3/8" sockets but it was to wide to fit. So I used a small 1/4" hex socket and that did the trick.
I noticed I dont have the black plastic cover that go over the metal lock ring. Do I need that and if so anyone have one? thanks

Will put up some pics later.
Holy crap, there is no need for red on this. Purple, Blue, or even Green would have sufficed.

I agree , since red needs heat to release it for removal , and it'd be pretty hard to heat these bolts given their location , it's together forever now ....
