I've removed and steam cleaned my carpet. I now want to re-dye it. It's color name by GM is "neutral" and came out of a 4th Gen Camaro.

I'm looking for a quality product to get the carpet back to its original color.

 

My quick amazon search produced several dyes, some listed for carpet. I do not think you will find your color, by name, on amazon.

 

What color is neutral?

 

I am not sure anything works well for this. I tried the Upholstery (Dupli Color Brand) paint and that did not last long. I first tried a dye made for carpet and it sucked, left it splotchy all over. I can't remember the name. The paint worked better. My carpet is grey.
IMHO if you went through the hassle of removing it unless $ is an issue just replace it. I ended up doing this after being left unhappy with trying to save the old carpet.

 

I've had good luck dyeing the Flame Red (which was faded to Pink) carpet in my '91 RS, using aerosol dyes from Corvette America. Only thing is, these cans are now $25/ea, and it will take maybe 3 of them to do your entire carpet. Have also had good luck with the SEM Color Coat line of aerosols here at work, but never used anything from them other than Landau Black.

After two pathetic attempts by ACC to make new carpet for my Formula, I began searching for companies and products to "restore" my OE carpet.

Search the internet and youtube. Search locally too. You might find a carpet cleaning and repair shop nearby that will do it or offer some advice or products.

 

For the money and your time involved, I would just go to www.stockinteriors.com and buy replacement carpet. It's not that expensive. They have many colors listed on their website, but they also have many, many more that they cant possibly list. I would email them and send them a small piece of your old carpet that isn't faded, (like from under the seat,) and they'll likely find you an exact match. If you do decide to order new, spend the extra $79.00 and get the "mass backing."

 

I used ZEM product dye on my 1972 Buick GS 20 years ago on vinyl. On carpet, I used Rit dye. Using hot water + Rit and a big wide brush, I literally painted the dye onto the carper. The carpet was on top of a sheet of plastic. Changed the colour from blue to black. 21 years later, the colour was still black.

 

I have used RIT fabric dye on my not-stock seats. RIT makes colored fabric dyes for normal fabrics and for synthetic fabrics. Luckily my seats are black so I didn't have to worry about color matching issues, but it did work. I re-dye my seats every couple years because the sun fades the black color. I would NOT use any type of spray on or aerosol fabric coloring, that is just a surface treatment and I would guess it makes the fabric feel different too, you want something that will dye the fibers, not cover them over. Thats my opinion on it.

you could do that. There are some instructions online and probably videos on if you google/youtube "RIT Fabric dye". For carpet, you might be able to mix up the dye in a bucket and use a soft hand brush to brush some dye into the carpet while it is still in the car...but I have usually used a sponge on my seats. Since the seats come out of the car easily, I take the seats out, mix up the solution, use a sponge and neatly wipe it into the fabric. I let it sit for half a day and then put the seats back in.

 

my experience with carpet dyes is don;t.....

it will work pretty good for a hile, but once they dry and get more "age, will brush right off.... they also lwave a weird feeling / coat on the carpet... id just get new carpet, and if you cant get the same color, something very close.
