Does anyone know who sells carpet by-the-foot or a carpet kit for our consoles?
I see that Third Gen Ranch carries the kits but not in blue. I'm not sure if I want to do business with them anyway based on the complaints I have read. Some of their prices seem too good to be true.
If you are planning to purchase a new carpet, some places let you order extra material by the yard for things like consoles, door panels, etc...
This is nice because you are getting all your carpet from the same dye lot.
If you don't need a new carpet, you might have a hard time finding anywhere to sell you just the material - at least that's what I ran into when I was in this situation.
I am looking into that now. ACC will sell carpet by the yard at about 6' wide! That's a lot of carpet! I'm sure it will take up a significant amount of my total purchase of the carpet set.
I suppose I could resell the left over carpet.
I still haven't found anybody else besides Third Gen Ranch that sells a kit.
Check out this post for where I got my carpet. If you order samples first, they’ll include a letter with a discount code for your order. It’s not a ton but every bit helps. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...ml#post6500102
Thirdgen Ranch has a history of being slow to communicate and slow to fill orders, so a lot of people have been upset by the service. Ordering is fine, although the website seems to have some glitches sometimes, prices are good, and if you're patient and stay on top of the order, then it's likely to end well. I've only had one experience with him, and because I knew I'd have to remind him, and I wasn't demanding it tomorrow, everything was good.
Thirdgen Ranch shows complete interior carpet kits in blue, but it doesn't look like the console carpet is included in the kit. And the listing specifically for console carpet lists every color except blue, which is odd, so that might be an accidental omission. I'd ask him, because it seems like it should be available in blue too.
But I doubt he cuts those kits himself, so he's getting them from somewhere, maybe ACC. It might be worth asking the ACC companies, like Stock Interiors or Automotive Interiors, if they offer the kits. They offer a lot of carpet colors that aren't listed, that you have to ask them about, so maybe they offer the kits too. Or, as you know, you can get extra unbacked carpet by the yard from the ACC companies and cut it yourself.
I did a little more searching and discovered that Automotive Interiors sells by the half-yard for $25. Very reasonable. I need to lay out the dimensions of the console and kick panels to see if that would be enough. I think I would rather make my own instead of taking a chance with Third Gen Ranch.
After looking a little closer, I can see that the console carpet is not the same material as the floor. It's a more of a finer pile. The kits for the console and the cargo area sides are called "Felt". And since ACC appears to be the only one that sells the cargo felt, black, brown and beige are the only ones available. And, it doesn't look like ACC is the one that supplies the console kits. Third Gen Ranch is the only one I see so far and their color choices are limited too. I can tell from a video that it doesn't have the backing that the factory has. It looks more like the felt you use for speaker enclosures, except thicker and fuzzier. But, I think it would look OK, just not as fuzzy as factory. I can't tell for sure unless I could compare both side by side.
I would say that the felt is the only material that can be used for the cargo compartment sides as the kits appear to be flat material. Felt is the only material that I know of that can be easily formed to the contours.
The kick panel carpet is more like the floor carpet except it's a shorter pile. But, that appears to be included with the cargo kit.
I pulled the cargo pieces from a Firebird in the junkyard, and it's definitely carpet, with a plastic backing. I've ordered the felt replacement before, and sent it back, it's definitely not the same material at all. The carpet seems to be the same as the back of the seat, thin without a mass backing or anything. I can snap some pictures tonight once I get home if you'd like. There's no real compound areas it needs to conform to, since each section is separate.
I purchased the console carpet set from Thirdgenrach, blue with the intent to "freshen" up the interior. Then I got myself into this "Amateur" restoration with the car and ended up buying an entire console (top and bottom) from Thirdgenrach with new console carpet installed. Funny how projects evolve. So, with that said here are some pictures of what Denny sent for the console carpet kit.
I opened this today and laid it in window light for better color visual. Closer view of the texture. Here is a picture of the lower console that I bought that included the carpet, and the new carpet from ACC. The color is deceiving since this is in the car using an LED work light.
I can take a picture of the back if you need it.
Speaking of need, since I have the extra set sitting around (minus brush, glue, and instructions), anyone is welcome to it. Send me a PM and pay for shipping.
There's a thumbs up for Thirdgen Ranch from Fireball ******. Oh, now that's funny! Part of his username is a forbidden word lol. BTW, changing the subject for a moment, I think Fireball ****** is a member of TGO, and for people who might not watch him on YT, his latest video has a serious announcement by him, so people might want to check it out and/or reach out to him. Ok back to the topic at hand...
The pirate is right. My previous Z28s had the carpeted trim, and it was carpet. And I've also looked at carpeted panels in junkyard cars, and it was backed carpet like the kick panels.
AC is showing the "unbacked auto grade carpet," as TGR calls it (which isn't felt, but it does have a similar appearance, so I can see why someone might refer to it as felt) in blue, so it is available, but you'll have to ask for it or buy AC's if he's selling it. It comes rolled up, so it probably has to rest awhile to flatten out.
I have some bulk cut pile carpet from ACC in Dark Grey. I also have some of the same material from TGR that AC is showing, but in what he sells as Medium Dark Grey/Dove Grey. It came with an interior rear cargo hatch I got from him. Here are a couple of pictures comparing them. One picture shows the thicknesses of each, and the other shows them partially unrolled, showing faces and backs, although the stuff from TGR is probably reversable. The stuff TGR sells is about 1/4" thick, kind of like headliner material but carpet instead of foam.
