LTX and LSX Putting LT1s, LS1s, and their variants into Third Gens is becoming more popular. This board is for those who are doing and have done the swaps so they can discuss all of their technical aspects including repairs, swap info, and performance upgrades.

So i dropped my car off at ThirdGenResource Today.......

There was a breif debate above about what a LS1 will put out at the wheels in stock trim. Well I can only attest to what I have witnessed. Last summer my friends BONE STOCK 2002 Trans Am WS6 with the manual transmission put out 326.6 rwhp. I was there when it happened and I have seen the dyno sheet numerous times. The factory rating for these cars is 325 bhp. So it's not hard to tell that GM underated these cars. And I think stock LS1's putting out 280-290 rwhp is also a little underated.

Just my .02!

I believe the difference may be the LS6 intake that was used on later versions of the LS1......

Yeah, ya know....I'm defineitely NOT an LS1 expert, so I wasn't gonna chime in, but I've heard plenty of later LS1's with the LS6 intake makin' well over 300 hp.

With the mods to the exhaust and intake I would expect at least 300 hp with an manunal. Are you going to do any tuning to the computer?

Not any performence tuning......Getting rid of VATS, Un-necessary stuff, and of course, I will be removing that stupid speed limiter........:lala:....Now i just have to find a place where i can see just how close to the factory rating of 167mph i can get to.......

To the dismay of many, i will not be putting a cam in the engine, I'm trying to keep the internal components of the engine stock w/ a few bolt-ons.....Trying to stay away from internal modifications......Looking for a good reliable stock engine that will run low numbers.....

Just a little update the engine is out of the car, and the LS1 is out of the SS.........He's waiting for the parts to come in so he can install the LS1.......The 305 TBI, tranny and rear end are out of my car.....He mentioned that pictures should be up on his website this weekend......

You going in the right direction! Congrats!

Now all ya have to do is get rid of that wing!

Hawks 5 inch spoiler would look nice on your car, so would the 91-92 Z High rise spoiler.

Another idea: maybe some how try to graft an '02 Camaro SS spoiler on the car. That would be cool! Anyone up for a photo-shop of what that would look like?

Wahoo, now your car will be as fast as it looks hehe
And rather than just have extreme jealousy like I thought I would have had hehe, I don't because I'm just happy that people out there are making a real good rep for thirdgens when you get them to this level, so it's all good

and I don't want to get off topic, but when you guys are saying that an auto LS1 only gets about 10 or 15 less hp to the rear wheels, could the same be said to a 350 in a 700r4?
I'm just asking as the only thing I somewhat don't like about my car is that it's an auto. I love auto's for quick shifts, easy driving, and remote start easibility, but manuals are fun, and if they don't add a ton more power in a third gen then I won't feel so bad about going with the auto hehe.

While I may not be the biggest fan of the spoiler, you're car can now completely DESTROY mine, so I can't say ****. Congrats on the "upgrade." I only wish I could drop 10 G's on my Camaro. I've only got about half of that to drop in my new motor and put a Maaco paint job on it.

My bros 2000 Trans Am has all of that but no cut-outs. he has a ford 9" rear end which robs way more power than stock 10 bolts and still pulled 406 rear wheel horse.

My bone stock, as far as I know, 2000 Trans Am with about 28k on it put down 294 hp and 306 ft/lbs on a DynoJet dyno. It is a 6 speed. 326 HP is a ringer, but not unheard of from a 2002 or 2001, when they got the LS6 intake.

I have to back that one up. That car is going to be absolutely SICK when it's finished. Only to be tainted with that godforsaken hideous **** wing.

When spending 10Gs, what's an extra couple hundred to obtain a really slick looking 3rd Gen by swapping the wing for a high rise spoiler? Everything else on that car is sweet..

PLEASE, MAKE US ALL PROUD AND DITCH THAT WING!

Man you guys are brutal..This thread is about swapping in an ls-1 .Not if he should keep or ditch the wing..Personally I don't like it either but it's his car and he should have the choice on what to do with it .Think about it this way. When ever he is at a light and someone dissis his sesna airplane wing. now he could totally smoke em and say. what did you say about my wing????? ..Keep us posted and make sure to get some pics of that badboy when it's done.............

hopefully everything will turn out good and good luck
1991 Z-28, for some reason, I didn't think headers would fit. How does the engine bay look? Tight fit? Maybe you could send me some pics...

Almost forgot, CONGRATULATIONS FLYNLOW92rs. Sounds like a great mod combo you picked. By the way, does anyone have performance numbers (RWHP, 1/4 mile times, etc.) of the LS1 in thirdgens? Thanks!

WOOO HOOO

Turns out the transmission has gotten a new centerforce clutch that Roy found while taking out the transmission, so add that to the list of modifications.....

Motor mounts are installed, new pedals are in, misc mounting brackets are installed....

Engine & Tranny are going in tomorrow

Roy has pictures that are going to be e-mailed to me, so i'll post them when i recieve them.....

Now for the wing, Your comments and constructive critizism is what got to me ditch the original 3-piece spoiler, ditch the ol' 305 TBI, and ditch the Neeper Rims, but the line has been drawn at the wing, it's staying......I give my opinions on what other people do to their car, so i don't expect people not to give me their opinions about mine.......

I'm sorry to hear that! It's a shame that it takes so much away from your car. Especially now you got the LS-1 and the new wheels on her. Oh well, it's only an opinion.

Props on the LS-1 though!

u know... as weird as it may look, to me the wing on FlynLow's car looks right... maybe ive just grown accustom to it. its the only thirdgen that could pull it off. the wheels actually bothered me more then the wing

i think the person who owns the car makes it what it is... i mean, ive known several people with fast cars or good looking cars who are total azzes about it and it just makes me care less about the car they own. but FlyNLow has been a great sport with the many "dude your wing is ugly!" "your ricing out your car!" of course just as much of the criticsim was polite and whatnot. this is one of the few threads ive been constantly checking too see the pics.

i'll get off my soapbox now

and FlyNLow, get some pics!

You're going to want to get rid of the 3.42 gears. 4.10's are the way to go and are the best bang for the buck on an LS1 car since they love the upper RPMs.
We dropped 7 tenths in the 1/4 with a gear swap.
Put a cam, some long tubes and dual exhaust with an x-pipe, lid, LCA relocation brackets, and some other bolt ons and the car went 12.04 @ 117mph.
It was a 99 Hugger Orange SS 6 Speed hard top. Car died in a head on collision, but some parts were saved, like the rear end which is now in my car.

Oh, and having subframe connectors saved my friend from serious injuries, so those should be the #1 mod done to your car.

Not to worry Zepher, I already have gotten the Spohn SFC's , the car won't be driven 1 mile without these being installed first, also got a Kenny Brown 3 pt. Strut Tower Brace........

As for times for a thirdgen LS1

Spartech ran a LS1 with the following mods

LS6 Intake
CompCams Cam
LCA's
Weld Drag Lite wheels w/ kumo tires
3" exahust w/ cutout
Aluminum Driveshaft

It ran a best of 11.921 @115.35 mph, this was with 2.73 gears and stock TPI intake, no body weight reduction

more info can be found here...http://www.speartech.com/track.html

I hope to beat that...... .....I just have to get a hold of some WeldDrag Lite wheels & Tires before i hit the track.............oh yeah, and get used to driving a manual....:lala:

Hey man, I hope it didn't feel like I was dissing you for the wing. Then again, you're probably immune to it by now. I've read tons of posts in regard to your wing for the better part of a year now.

AND YOU'VE YET TO CAVE IN AND REPLACE IT!!!! Good man.. knows what he wants and doesn't give a crap at what others think.

I have to hand it to him though, that IS probably the only 3rd Gen I've ever seen with a wild AFTERMARKET (notice I held back from saying ryce) wing that didn't look just assinine (sp?). It actually looks at home on his car.

As for the rims, I don't know why everybody harshes on his rims. I think they look pretty phat.

Props to you for creating a very unique 3rd Gen; now both inside AND out. I bet that thing scares the crap out of you at first.

I think you mean TPI Exhaust(from cat to muffler). But with the cutout, it doesn't make too much difference.

I'm assuming the entire exhaust was re-done, but here is a picture of the stock TPI intake being used.....

Here is a picture of it taking off at the track on the 11.921 run......hopefully the wheels will come off the ground on my car considering, it's about 100 pounds lighter then the one pictured...

whoops when you said intake I was thinking intake manifold.

That car has a few more mods to help it lift its tires. Cam, 4400 tq, crank pulley, and some rear suspension mods.

You can see the cutout at the bottom of the pic.

Here is a picture of it taking off at the track on the 11.921 run......hopefully the wheels will come off the ground on my car considering, it's about 100 pounds lighter then the one pictured...

Whys is yours lighter? Also i think the 11.921 time was run on some hoosier quick time tires.

Yes, I have owned two previous cars that were manuals, and have driven my uncle's BMW M3 which is also a manual........I've just been driving a automatic for the past 3 years......

Derfrank: As for mine being lighter

Fiberglass Hood
Plastic Headlights (light bar removed)
Removed All emissions, Charcoal canister
Removed Spare & Jack
Removed Back seats
Aluminum Radiator
Removed all Heater related accessories

And I only weigh 115 lbs....

I'm sure they have done weight reduction mods too, so that was a guess from what i have seen on the website.......

Still haven't gotten pictures from Roy, 4 days after the fact of speaking to him about it.......

Only thing is, our back seats down weight anything, neither do the front seats. I kept mine in to keep it stealthy.

the two front seats weigh id guess 40-50 pounds total theyre not that light. And taking out the back seats is more so i dont get "yo man can i get a ride with you its just a little out of the way". I'm 17 tho so either ill have a girl in the passenger seat, or maybe a buddy but if its not a girl honestly i could care less my friends can find their own damn way around.

Thats very true about friends hassling to ride in my car but i just give them the excuse my headers will scrape, so no more than one person rides in my car too. The backseats weigh no more than 20 lbs total when i weighted it on my scale, i have the fold down seats. The bottoms weigh like 2 lbs a piece if that.

Why didnt you do the work? I know you gotta be paying an assload to have them do it... I been there, they are about 30 mins from my house and their facilities are avg. the local private owned garage I go to is nicer than theirs. I like the people and the place I just wouldnt pay them that much damn money. Hope you got a deal

I work 40 hours a week, and I am a full-time triple major student at Florida State University.......Just finding the time to do it would not work.....Not to mention that i own a 110 pc tool kit i bought from Target at $4.98 on 75% clearance......those are the only tools i own......I don't even own a power drill.......I live in an aparment with no garage.......

The reasons why i didn't do this on my own are about 1 mile long, and i'm sure you all don't want to scroll through 4 pages of me explaining why i can't and didn't do this myself.....

And yes, they are cutting me a deal.......labor is reasonable......nothing that i wouldn't expect from a local shop......
