Oil pan clearance

Ok all, I've got the LT1 mounted in my 87 TA, however, the oil pan looks to be very close to the front crossmember. Is this normal, i didn't pay attention to the old 305 before it came out. This LT1 is out of a Corvette and I used the motor mounts from my 305.

you don't have a tranny in there yet, right? Maybe that's causing it to not look like its right. The engine might be tilted foward/back a bit.

Hi again Firebat. No, the transmission is in there, however i do need a rear tranny mount. I just didn't think that would make that much difference. Is yours that close? It appears to only be a quarter inch or so away from the crossmember.

I noticed a picture that I found on here somewhere that looked like the y pipe going to the left header ran in between the crossmember and the sump area of the oil pan. I do not have my exhaust on the engine at this time, but there is no way anything is going in between the two on mine.

It looks to me like the motor is tilted back further than it should, if the tranny isn't raised up to the level of where it will sit on the crossmember, that could be throwing it off. I can stick my whole hand in between my oil pan and crossmember. It is also possible that the frame mounts are just wore out and sagging which will cause it to sit lower. My Hedman y-pipe goes in-between the sump and the crossmember.

Thanks for the information. I will have to take a look at things once I get the new tranny mount in. Hopefully its just down in the back from the tranny mount being shot. I also do not have the rear stabilizer bar hooked in at this time. I'll keep you all posted. Thanks so much for the help.

Ok guys, I have installed the new tranny mount and have the torsion bar hooked back up. From the sump to the crossmember I have about an 1/8th of an inch. No way that the Y-pipe is going to go in there. I can get my hand in between the pan and the xmember on the top, but once it turns down it is just about rubbing. I don't think my motor mounts are that bad. Any ideas? Is the corvette oil pan different than the f-bodys? Thanks again for the info.

I would say that the oil pans are different. I have a 2.5 inch y-pipe between my sump and crossmember.

Ok, as I'm going to have to change the oil pan to gain the clearance I need, getting an oil pan for an LT1 fbody should do the trick shouldn't it? Are there any other differences between the fbody and corvette engine that would present a problem?

nope, thats the only major difference as far as getting the engine in the car. that and the fuel rails have the line connections on the passenger side instead of the drivers side. easiest thing to do would be get a set of F-body fuel rails while you're at it.

Thanks for the reply. As far as the motor mounts go, I took the LT1 mounts off and replaced them with the mounts off my old 305. I don't see but one location to mount them. I have attached a pic below. Maybe I'm missing something.

I'm happy to say that the new oil pan is installed and everything looks good now. Had to change the pick up tube also. Now on to running hoses, fuel lines and all that fun wiring. I hope to have this thing running in a couple weeks. Thanks for the help everyone.
