I am looking into buying an LT1 to swap into my 92 Camaro RS. The only major change I plan on doing in the rebuild is changing to the hotcam. Other wise, the rebuild will be to just clean up the engine and paint it. How much should I expect to spend on gaskets and other such things.

 

It doesn't sound to me like you're talking about a rebuild, just a cam swap and clean-up.

A full gasket set will run about $100. If all you get are the gaskets to do the cam swap, about half or less of that.

Engine paint is about $7/can (may find it for less). You'll probably need two cans. If you completely remove all of the original paint, I'd suggest using an engine primer first, then the final coat. Engine degreasers, some paint thinner to remove oils from the surfaces, etc. Probably about $50 for all of that stuff.

 

Actually the gasket set is closer to $200 (with head gaskets) since with the Fel-pro (only gaskets to use) are the new perma-seal blue rubber gaskets and work like a charm. IIRC the oil pan gasket itself was around $40 but the rest should be like five7 said.

My block was thrashed when I got it.

Shop work was about 700 that was:
.30 over bore
deck block
fix main caps and rod caps due to spun bearings
deck block
deck heads
valve job
cam bearing press in

Pretty much everything that could go wrong happen to this engine. I'm suprised it was fixable. Heh I got the long block for free :-D

Then the HOT cam kit was 600ish gasket set was 210. New valve covers to clear the 1.6 rollers 100ish. Summit rebuild kit with heavy speed pro pistons 550.

I kinda went the cheap route on the rebuild kit. So about $2100 for me on the engine alone. The little things add up. I spent about 4k all together on my swap.

 

ItalianZ32, could you please explain exactly what you intend to do in this "rebuild"?

You seem to be using the term very, very loosely. You were very vague in your description, but it sounded to me like you're planning on a cam swap and paint job - nothing more. Not exactly the conventional use of "rebuild".

If that's what you meant, then all this talk about rings and bearings and machine work is moot.
