Looking into a 5.3 swap for my lo3 powered 89 rs
I was reading an old car craft mag. They got a truck motor (5.3). They put just a cam, headers, & an intake on it. They made 420hp, & 380tq. Does anyone know what cam, headers, & intake they used? Sorry I looked it up on google But could not find the info. It was in the the April 08 issue. If someone can scan it in so I can read the article. Reason I would want the whole article, is to find out everything I would need for the swap. I just think that for not much over 2k this is the best budget build. The 305 is to hard to find info on for how I want to build it. Also think a good 400hp 350 is both out of reach & unnecessary. Thanks guys.

I'd wager a guess that it was an LS6 intake, as there weren't many aftermarket LSx intakes untill just recently. Its not hard to get a 5.3 to make 400hp though... LS6 intake, cam in the 224/230 range and a set of good headers would do it (with tuning of course).

OK good insight. Now the hard part. Finding out what else is needed. I know the computer is needed, as well as the wire harness. Any help on the other stuff?

Yes. It's an LSx swap, so read the LS1 swap sticky.
And this is getting moved to that subforum.

Look in the LSx swap board, all the info you need is there in at least a dozen threads... lots of info and pics in mw66nova's thread ("ITS OFFICIAL"). Check it out.

PCM, Transmission of some sort, Headers and exhaust, radiator and fans, F-body accessories and accy brackets, F-body oil pan, LSx swap mounts. Thats all I can think of off the top of my head.

but it will make more power than any hopped up 305 ever will
a combo i put together made
[316rwhp] not impressive huh?, except its in my rcsb pickup truck and i run down lt1 fbodys and mod motor mustangs,
i have even beat a few bolt on gt mustangs from a dig with 3-4 lengths and even took out a bolt on lt1 car with a stall from a dig

build is 60k mile 5.3 bottom end
241 fbody heads, milled .030 with 5.7 mls gaskets
02 ls6 cam with springs, stock truck intake, stock truck manifolds with cats and stock exhaust with a 2.5 cutout. stock stall tc, deep pan with oil cooler and thats it, diy cai, with a tune and i get around 20mpg with spirited driving. dynoed on dynojet with stock wheels and tires. truck is my dd. i ran hopped up stalled 350 tpi firebird from a dig and a roll.
i lost count after 5 lengths

if youre looking for ls parts, i have a 99 5.7 longblock 70k miles
a 04 6.0 LQ4 longblock and 05 5.3 shortblock, also have intake manifolds. ls1, 6.0 and manifolds. and some 241 and 317 heads.
my other ls cars in clude a 375ci m6 00 SS
and a 99' 6.0 ht z28
but if u want to stick to your 2k budget, i have the top end off my 3rd gen, and it goes 10.8 on motor, and the heads, intake and roller cam are fs as well. (SBC)
