Turbo 5.7 to 6.0 LQ9 (tons amount of pics)

I have spent years on this website checking out what everyone has been doing and getting Idea's, I quite frankly love the arguements, they help me the best, because I have the same arguments in my head (Design Engineer).

I really didn't think that anyone would care to see another LS1 swap... but after looking, many people love to see as many photos as possible. I am probably on of them. So here you go... I will caption along the way.

This has a ton of pics (everyone likes that, I think).

To start I bent three rods with this.... I have been spraying 150shot for about 5yrs, probably 30 bottles....LOL but desided to go turbo.... lasted about 1000 miles before started make fun noises and oil pressure bouncing all over the place.

So that came out, and Instead of spending a bunch of money on a rebuild with a bunch of expensive forged gen 1 350 parts, went with a 6.0/4l80 out of a 2002 silverado.

cleanup began with the K-member. sanded bare and self-etching primered

As I look at it, I bought some HIGH flow heads, it just happened to come with the rest of the engine too. Along with all the GM improvements.

This is it, what we (thirdgeners) can use of a truck 6.0. The crank pulley will change too....

WIRING..... I choose to use the truck harness and ditch everything i didn't want and re-arrange the rest. It is some work, i don't mind I am a engineer and am used to re-wiring many, many wires. I don't recommend this but it is very possible. With the right data, and planning.

I set up the rough estimate of the wiring layout on the stand, most of the routing took place in the car.

And for those that would want to know, this was and EPIC FAIL...

the oil pan hits the k-member. I didn't want to beat on the firewall at all, so, the next day we seperated them and put one in at a time, me and one other guy (ford guy to boot) put it in easy, as Engine, then trans on the two-post lift and tranny jack.

This was still in progress but is shows, the wiring going into the firewall and to the mounting spot as factory thirdgen did. Because I used the truck harness I had plenty of length in the wiring.

The 4L80e wiring is tight, and I mean tight, the photo's look like they hit, but I assure you they don't. I didn't modify the tunnel at all.

I made my own cross member because no one makes one. wasn't hard (for me)

I don't have good pics yet of the exhaust, I used 2002 trans am manifolds very large Y-pipe setup with cut-outs, that merge right before it goes over the rear-end. into the American thunder II muffler and tail pipes.

Re: Turbo 5.7 to 6.0 LQ9 (tons amount of pics)

While we are under, I had to go with a new Torque arm setup, I choose the Jegster tunnel arm because I drag race the most. And it suits the 4l80 great.

but since I started upgrading the suspension, I might as well upgrade the rest. I got a set of Spohns combo, LCA's with a set of BMR's bolt on relocators because I am going to need a 9" really soon I am sure. w/ a Spohn pan hard bar for good measure.

I made rad hoses out of 2" stainless for good looks. And once they were made up. add some water and first start up.

Buttoned up the rest. I have version 1 of my duel air intake on it right now. this is going to be moved up to 4" both ways. Before final welding and polishing.

Re: Turbo 5.7 to 6.0 LQ9 (tons amount of pics)

Looks like you ran into what I'm looking at right now - oil pan too close to the k-member. And to make it a little more fun, that little brake line is right there too. Did you notch your k? Move the brake line? Those are my plans at least, it seems several others have gone this route and put the brake line on the front of the k.

Thanks for sharing your install w/pics. No matter how many swaps there are, it's still fun looking at another.

Yes, I moved the brake line in front of the k-member. I separated the engine and trans, and put them one at a time. Much faster and easier, for me because I have a lift.

That intake looks badass! I like that. Think it would work on the stock 5.7 TPI system? I might have to try it out lol

yes it would work just fine, on TPI, no one makes the radius"s tight enough, that I have found. So I made my own. Like I said above, I am going to make another, this time out of 4", two 4" in and 4" out. I know I don't need it but it won't hurt, and it will look more symetrical. Ofcoarse, welding the whole thing together to get rid of the silicon/clamps, will make it look even better.

Im probably looking to go 2.5"-3". What type of piping did you use? How much would that run you just for piping? I already have a few cone filters and c-clamps laying around so im good on that. Ill probably just weld everything together after fitting it.

Re: Turbo 5.7 to 6.0 LQ9 (tons amount of pics)

this was piping left over from the intercooler, setup. You can buy intercooler installation setups on ebay pretty cheap, and weld or aluminum braze it together. Pretty good deals. I believe I got:

4- 90's
4- 45's
4- Straight 2'

12- silicone connectors
24- cheap t-bolt clamps (not that great)

for like $150 I think
