Why call them lsx/ltx swaps why not ls/lt

I dont understand why we have to put the x inthere. i know its for the x factor but there is a block called the LSX. that should be a LSX swap not a ls1. I always called it a ls swap. The (LSX BOWTIE BLOCK) is a Fully CNC-machined cast iron block
• True priority main oiling
• 6-head bolts per cylinder
• Standard 4.400" bore spacing
• Extra-thick siamese cylinder bores
• Semi-finished, machined thicker decks
• LS7-style, 6-bolt dowel-located billet main bearing caps
• Wet-sump and dry-sump oiling capability
• Production-style deep-skirt head bolt holes
• Production bolt hole and thread sizes
• Maintains production exterior accessory mounting provisions
• Front motor plate mounting holes added
• Additional material cast around cam bearings for greater strength
• 8mm exterior/interior fifth- and sixth-head bolt holes
• All five cam bores machined for bearing P/N 19167218 (supplied)
• Standard 0.842" lifter bores
• Accommodates all LS oil pumps and oil pans
• External oil pump feed (rear of block)
• Main web bay-to-bay breathing holes to support greater horsepower
• Includes unique cam retainer, rear cover, lifter retainers and productionstyle replacement cam bearings For the advanced LSX competition engine builder, you will fully enjoy reading the following features of the new LSX Bowtie Block:
• Front oil feed holes can be plugged/restricted for mechanical flat tappet or mechanical roller lifter applications
• Can be machined safely to 9.200" deck height
• Maximum 4.200" bore at .200" minimum wall thickness (naturally aspirated applications)
• Head bolt holes can be machined for 1/2" studs
• Cam bores can be machined to accept 60mm roller bearings
• Can be machined for larger diameter lifters and/or 1.060" bronze bushings
• Front oil feed lines can be plugged and external oil pump and/or aftermarket dry sump systems can be used via oil pump feed at rear of block—may be required with certain large stroke/aluminum rod combinations
• Belt cam drive systems can be accommodated—some machining will be required
• Front motor plate can be used for racing chassis applications (sprint car, drag racing, truck pulling, etc.)
• Threaded water plugs can be used for external heaters or coolers
• Extra stock for main bearing align-honed inch and it is a small block.

NOW THAT IS A LSX SWAP ONE BAD BLOCK

Written properly, it should be LSx but everybody is lazy.

LSx is because you have LS1 LS2 etc. Same with LTx LT1 LT4 etc.

When selling a car, do you report the mileage as 125,387 miles, or 125,xxx miles? The x is a place holder for any integer. There are many different LSx blocks, so an x is used to cover the whole family.

Re: Why call them lsx/ltx swaps why not ls/lt

Still in the LSx family along with my LM7

L99 is a 4.3 LTx even though theres no "T" in the engine code

Dont confuse LSx (which can be anything) with LSX which is the GMPP block notable for it's 6 bolt heads, stronger walls, larger displacement and flashy red powder coat. Still in the LSx family, just a very specific name

Not everybody is lazy (with capitalization). That started with the texting generation. All caps, no punctuation, run-on sentences, abbreviated words, numbers in place of words - doesn't come from old farts.

Anyway, there's more confusion than convention out there. Why not call them "Gen II" and "Gen III"? Okay, then what do you call the '96-'99 "Vortec" truck engines? Speaking of Vortec, why are '96-'99 and '00-up truck engines all called "Vortec", when they are completely different? Why are the V6 truck engines also called "Vortec"?

What's the difference between an "LT-1" and an "LT1"? How about "LS6" and "LS6"? If you say you have an "LS4", will that necessarily distinguish exactly what you have?

All you need to know is how the crowd you're hanging out with uses the various terms.

IIRC, the Vortec V6 was the original vortec motor, and let not forget about the Vortex motors. LT-1, that's easy, 302 or 350 smallblock (depending on year and model) the hottest carb smallblock motor to go into a factory smallblock. LS6, could be a 454 or an LSx motor, LS4, either a FWD LSx or another 454. We could go on for days, even the L99, it's comeback as a 6.2L LSx whereas it used to be a 4.3L LTx motor.

Must not be that easy, as it was never offered in 302 form.

I thought the 302 in the 67-69 Z-28 was named LT-1 also.

Don't you know 'Vortec' means any V8 with centerbolt valve covers anymore? The intelligence level of the general public just keeps getting lower.

GEN I, II, III, IV are all SBC's, but when someone says SBC they generally default to GEN I

Kind of pointless to call the new stuff small blocks since GM axed the whole BBC line after the 8.1L. It's simply GM V8's

DZ was the suffix code, the RPO was still Z28.

The engine was never given a specific name or letter/number designation. It was special enough in its own right.

The LT-1 was also used in Vettes, so it wasn't quite as "special".

Actually, it proves the point. There are a lot of confusion, misnomers, and misinformation out there.

We've even had people argue that there was no such thing as an "L98" in 3rd gen f-bodies. And, they're probably right.

Personally, I object to the use of "motor" instead of "engine" (this was the "Motor Swap" forum at one time), but...

Technically the Gen III/ Gen IV motors are a mid block.

Re: Why call them lsx/ltx swaps why not ls/lt

5.7L 3rd gens have L98 on the RPO sticker, but GM considered the B2L the iron head TPI 350, and that leaves L98 for the aluminum-head 'vette version, which has no other ID. I think that's the way it should be, but third gen guys refuse to switch to using B2L, and there's nothing anyone can do about it. Well, they could get the same software as other forums, where certain things you type and submit come up as something else. On one forum, and I'm sure ericjon262 has seen this, if you type "Archie" in your post, then after you click submit, it shows up as: "Cletus". If you type "Aaron", it shows: "Retard". If TGO had that software, then we could have way more accuracy.
And about the LS4 block that five7kid mentioned, it really is very different from all other LSx blocks, and likewise it's special crank. It's FWD only, except if swapped into a Fiero. The block is shorter, the crank is shorter at both ends, and other such.

Except, and this is important... GM engine codes almost always start with L. All the way back to the 60's you'll find GM engine codes Lxx, and no Bxx engine codes. And the LT1 in the 9C1 and Impala SS had iron heads (instead of aluminum) and are still LT1's. Like it or not, L98 is the engine code.

You could argue that B2L triggered iron heads, or the cast iron manifolds, or any number of other items, but there's no concrete proof to back up those notions.

Why is it important? Who says? The L is still there. Surely GM is allowed to move it. And if it was for the iron manifolds, then the LB9 / T5 cars would have had the same code, since they used the same high-flow exhaust manifolds. The dual-cat option was N96, IIRC, and both engines got that.

N96 is a wheel. N10 is a converter package.

Whole lotta engines in the B codes aren't there...

GM groups codes by the first digit... All the G codes are axle related, N codes are typically wheels, L codes are engines, B codes are packages and options.
We know that B2L has something to do with the engine, but it doesn't make any sense for it to be the engine code. Common sense and human logic shows L98 is the engine code.

Re: Why call them lsx/ltx swaps why not ls/lt

The only thing i am getting at is people say lsx swap and how much harder is it to say ls6 swap, ls7 ls3 ls1 swap. If you had a ls6 and another guy had a ls1 would you want him to say its the same. is a 350sb 383sb a 400 sb 327 all the same. i dont think so. So if you say lsx how about have a LSX. if you read the whole thing that i wrote i wrote that people used it as a x factor but i think it is retarded. if you are going to not specify wich one then just put ls or lt. If you are going to put: ls1 ls2 ls3 ls6 ls7 ls9 or LSX. The other thing is i have a LSX block and it cost as much as a LS swap. not to mention the twin AR70 T4s next to it. Mine is the LSX bored and displaced as a 427 not a LS1 diff of 500hp

When you get the rest of the world to behave the way you think it should, let us know and we'll apply your desires to TGO as well...

Often, someone will say something to the effect of, "I'm going to do a 2003 Vortec swap...", and wonder if their V6 TH700R-4 will be okay to use. We'll respond, "You're basically looking at an LSx swap, so check out the sticky for the basics of what you're looking at." Or, they know they want the new technology, but aren't sure which displacement to go after, so they say, "I am considering an LSx swap..."

Really, in the grand scheme of things, which is worse? Continuing to use the term "LSx" in a clearly understood although less than a technically correct fashion, or the current state of the federal debt?

Numbers in place of words came from Counterstrike actually, it's called 1337 sp34k.

It pre-dates counterstrike considerably. IIRC it started being used during the 80's on some BBSes or on other similar setups/networks. Possibly earlier but I do not know hard years.

Maybe so, but I'd say Counterstrike is what made it "popular".

Re: Why call them lsx/ltx swaps why not ls/lt

The real question here is why does it make the original poster so uncomfortable that people use LSx instead of dropping one letter off and using LS? It's one letter, is it going to make that bog of a difference? You argue that saying LSx groups them all together and makes them sound like they're all the same, which could make someone with an LS3 mad that someone calls it the same thing as an LS1... But wouldn't calling them "LS" swaps also group them together, keeping them non-differentiated?

I think I'll keep saying LSx because it's funny that it gets under your skin so badly lol

The LSx and LTx is used on more than just this board alone, it's become a common phrase to use. Even alot of publications are using them and when the reference the mac daddy block, they put LSX since that is the name of it.

And I'm going to venture to say that the majority of the LSx powered cars there didn't have the actual "LSX" block too eh?

it sounds like it was me that got under your skin, and im sorry. but i have seen your car and its really clean i like it. nothing personal just wanted to see a reaction. and to make it any better i striped my LSX project (3rd gen) to build a 1st gen. i used the parts from mine to build up my lil bros 88 iroc. i kept the engine to drop in the 67. if you have anymore guestions be sure to ask me, im all about it. even worst ive worked on my 87 for 4 years and never cranked it. injoy that i know you will have a hay day with it
