Any 3rd gen LSx/T56 drag race? (my results inside)

Went to the track this week, California speedway, 70 degree weather, DA was about 2200.

Car set up: 83 Z28, Modded LS1 400+rwhp and same tq, MN12 T56(GTO), 12 bolt Moser(3.08 gears), GTO spares, MT ET Streets out back

1st Pass: wanted a quick 11's second pass then park the car and enjoy the car show after waiting almost 2 hours in the staging lanes.

Launch was decent maybe 1.8, shifted at about 6400, couldn't get into 2nd hit rev limiter, gear went in finally, again shifted at 6400 and couldn't get it into 3rd.

13.X@105mph

After the run, my pedal was stuck a few inches from the floorboard. Very upset but decided to granny shift one run just to get a 12 second pass.

2nd pass: 4500 rpm clutch dump, granny shifted at 5700 rpm (left off gas, pause, hit clutch, pause, shift then floor it)

1.8 60 ft.
1/8 mile 8.1@87~
1/4 mile 12.3@115

Drove car home in limp mode with clutch on the the floor. Diagnosed the problem and found out my Ram Master Cylinder was leaking from the shaft seal --> not holding pressure or returning pedal.

Has anyone had success at the track with the Tick Master cylinder? I'm hurting for an 11 second pass before I go with bigger cubes.

My 2nd of two passes so far this year. Remember we're at 5800' elevation.

R/T .007
60' 1.990
330' 5.524
1/8 8.470
MPH 84.100
1000' 10.998
1/4 13.118
MPH 106.920

DA per the track was 6050'. My weather station said closer to 6500'. 4 mph head wind.

I still haven't sorted out the rear suspension settings - with 26.0 x 9.50-14 Hoosier QTP DOT it was slipping bad at the hit (4500 RPMs), hence the poor 60'. Next time out I'll mount the 27.0 x 10.50-15's and probably launch around 5k. Previous pass (first of the season) I launched at 4000 RPMs, 60' was 1.95, but I didn't hit the 1-2 and 2-3 shift points and was banging the rev limiter (6200 - I try to shift at 6k), and it only ran a 13.21 @ 107.0 mph. DA was similar, but no head wind.

We got rained out after the 2nd TT that day. Next race is June 25th. I hope to get out for a test session before that.

My best with LT4 heads/cam was a 12.7 @ 109 I think. Been too many years. The 396 that's in there now should be good for 11's if I ever get the clutch issues worked out.

5.7kid, what clutch and master cylinder are you running? Impressive times for that DA, what does that convert to at our track with 2000 DA(California Speedway)?

I think I felt my Spec3+ slip for the 1st time on my 2nd pass. There was a slight hesitation in the launch, then rpm's dropped all of a sudden and the car started moving.

Texas, what clutch are you running and drivetrain set-up?

I'm running the LS7 clutch/flywheel and stock 2000 Camaro master cylinder with the drill mod. At 2000', that would translate to about a 12.55 @ 111 MPH (under similar conditions - it was pretty cool that night). 60' is killing me. I'd guess the 3.08 gears are killing you (I'm running 4.11's in the 9").

Car weighs about 3500 going down the track.

Why do you have 3.08 gears??? That's crazy, especially with a T56.

I have 4.10 gears in my 2000 Camaro and I'm still under 2000 RPM at 70 MPH.

sounds like the op hasnt done the hydraulic line mod. theres a restriction in the stock line that when drilled out, prevents the pedal sticking problem.

Re: Any 3rd gen LSx/T56 drag race? (my results inside)

3.08 gears went in because at the time I was going to go with big turbo set-up but then I quit my job to go back to school full time=no more funds for turbo. If i did swap them out the highest I would go would be 3.55 with the MN12 gearing.

The ram slave cylinder does have the drill mod done to the line. I just spoke to Ram Clutches and apparently the master cylinders only carry a 30 warranty from Summit

Debating whether the Tick is worth the extra $100. Not too many 3rd gens are running it currently.

Pocket, that kind of consistency make me want to switch to an auto. 6L80 with 3.08 gears... I know I would easily go 11's with a stalled auto.

Can you powershift with the tick master?

Can you powershift with the tick master? I could powershift into 3rd in the C5Z(stock LS6 clutch and hydraulics) and spin the tires(goodyears) going 60+mph but I can't do the same in my 3rd gen which weighs about the same and makes more power.

I believe its a hardwood hood, 3 inch.

That's what i want to hear, i'm at about the same power level. Will be ordering one soon. How's the pedal feel with the LS7? My Spec3+ with the Ram MC and oe hydraulics is significantly stiffer than a stock set up.

With the shorty headers and small exhaust mine went 13.11 at 113 with severe traction issues, clutch sticking to the floor an the posi peglegging it in second or third every pass. Im headed back soon with all new rear suspension parts and some drag radials.

Yeah.. Tuner said 7.2 at 97 mph is what she should run with a good 60' and that would be right about sea level

i ran 12.74 @ 112, 2.04 60 Ft, 3350 LB Race Weight and w/ 4.10's. I have a Tick Master and it is with out a doubt the best thing you can buy. I have a stage 4 monster and it feels like a stock clutch. I run it up to about 6300 and it does wonders bangin them gears Like everyone else is sayin the 3.08's is not a good gear for drag racing.

I took the car back out to the track for a few runs last night. Changes since previous runs:
- from open cat outlets to Y-pipe to Force II exhaust
- from 26x9.50-14 Hoosier QTP DOTs tubeless on Berlinetta rims to 26x10.50-15 MT ET Drags tubed on steel rally rims
- from 3 degrees down pinion angle to 2 degrees down
- from 6050' DA to 8800' DA
- from 4000 & 4200 RPM launches to 5200 & 5300 RPM launches
- from 3500 pounds to 3640 pounds

It took a lot more RPMs to get the car moving. Final pass was best 60' to date, 1.95, and it still bogged a little. Next time out I'll 5500 and see what happens.

Oh, best pass under the latest conditions was 13.57 @ 103.5 MPH. Part of the loss was due to higher DA, part due to increased weight (steel rims, tubed larger slicks, full exhaust), part due to the full exhaust (maybe - not sure the quiet exhaust actually slowed the car any - DA and weight pretty much account for the difference).

I'm probably going to swap in some 3.55 for now if I don't see the improvement i'm looking for but I refuse to go stalled auto and be limited to drag racing. What's the DA on that run?

It feels great, its a little stiff, but I dont have nothing to compare my statement to. I never experienced stock f-body hydraulics. Order one and never look back.

I have a Tick M/C and I love it . Never had any issues. It's been in the car for over a year. My best ET has been a 12.96 @117 on Kumho all season radials, T56, 3:42 rear gear. Shifting has never been a problem. Traction's another story. I have a 9" ford going in very soon. 3:75 gears and some sticky tires FTW.

While it is fun to get down to sea level and get a nitrous-like kick at the hit, this car probably won't do that this year. I have a dream of doing Drag Week sometime, though (after all, it does have a hitch and trailer brake for the support trailer...).

On the other hand, every few years the NHRA Division 5 ET finals is held here. Seeing the first-time-at-altitude flat-landers poking under the hood scratching their heads wondering what's wrong with their car after their first few time trials - priceless.

Hey Z28FAST1, did you have to run spacers to use the GTO spares on the front?

Yes, 2 inch spacers. I think 2.5 spacers would be ideal because they tuck in a bit.

What kind of car is that you are lined up against in the 2nd pic? It looks like a crappy old 4 door chevy citation or buick skylark.
Was it a fast car or someone just take it out there for kicks? If it was fast that's one heck of a sleeper look.
