Should this be in my tranny filter?

Well after finding out my trans isnt pumping fluid through the tranny I decided to pull the pan and make sure the filter was on tight as someone suggested, before I went ahead and pulled the trans. I pulled the filter off, and it was up in there good and tight, but I heard a rattling noise coming from the filter when I pulled it off. I dumped it out and out came a small piece of aluminum. Just a small little rectangular piece, maybe half an inch wide and only the thickness of a quarter. I have no idea where it came from but can't believe it is supposed to be in there. Any chance this could be block the flow of fluid? Also, does this piece belong somewhere else?, and what is its function? I took a few pictures of it.

Two of the edges on this piece are somewhat rounded and smooth. Looks almost like some kind of vane or something but I honestly have no clue.

Are you sure thats aluminum? If its a part I can't foresee any purpose for it, and if its a piece of a part its awfully uniform in shape, it does however look an awful lot like how I would expect a filter magnet to look, which are for catching metal shavings in the trans pan.

Definitely not a filter magnet, I do have one in the pan though. I think I answered my own question though. It does indeed look like a pump vane IMO:

Hmm, yep, hadn't thought of a pump vane, it definitely does look like one, and the fact its aluminum definitely backs that up.
Should definitely pull the trans and get the front pump out and check the rotor, would be a good time to upgrade to a 10 or 13 vane as well, stock pump rotor doesn't keep line pressure up well at higher rpms, either like 5 or 6k rpms if memory serves.

\i just hope that a pump vane circulating through the trans didnt screw up anything internally. |Or if that is the only vane that is floating around inside. I wish I bought a different trans...

RPM transmissions is the only way to fly if you want to run a 4L60e imo. Not cheap but its a one time purchase until 9.0 1/4 times. No crap they are that good

i dont see how a it could have made it throught the trans like that and not be damaged. No doubt its from the pump but it wouldnt have just gone through the trans like that. had to have happened durring assembly. My guess is there are a few more missing from the pump which is deff your pressure issue

Yeah, I am pulling the trans tonight and am gonna try and dissassemble the pump and see if there are more vanes missing. Not sure if I want to even use this trans if there are parts floating around inside, but it supposedly has 0 miles on it (definitely looks brand new inside and out from what I can see).

I'm guessing this was a stray vane that found its way into the pump pickup passage during assembly and dropped into the filter when the tranny was put horizontal. It doesn't explain your lack of fluid flow, but it does indicate a lack of attention to detail when the tranny was being assembled.

You'd have to work pretty hard to get a vane from the rotor to the filter with the transmission assembled. Not so hard to drop one when everything is apart.
