83 fuel tank, want electric fuel pump in tank

Okay, I have my 83 fuel tank out and want to install an electric in tank fuel pump. My 83 was a carb with a manual fuel pump on the block (old school). I'm putting in an LT1 and need an electric fuel pump. My first thought was to install an 89 Camaro sending unit with a fuel pump that powered a fuel injected engine. That cost $186 for the fuel pump assembly with the sending unit. Is this just a bolt in? Do the locking rings match? Am I heading in the wrong direction here? Any advice? I'd like to avoid an inline set up. Thanks

Maybe the 4th Gen tank swap?

Re: 83 fuel tank, want electric fuel pump in tank

After reading all these links, this is what I think I gathered from the info; 1) my 83 gas tank doesn't have any baffles which will lead to fuel starvation in turns when an electric fuel pump is installed in the tank. 2) In a 3rd gen TPI car, does the gas tank have baffles in it? 3) A plastic tank would be a nice upgrade, but the installation looks intimidating.

So, the question is:

Does a 90 Camaro with a fuel injected 5.7 motor have a baffled fuel tank?

If so, will the fuel pump in a 90 Camaro, with Fuel injection, run a LT1?

idk about the 1st part, it's been so long since I had the tank out of my '92 that I couldn't tell you, but the 2nd part I can answer: as long as it's tuned port injection. Fuel pump for throttle body injection is waaay to low pressure.

EDIT: upon further research it appears that 90-92 cars were all baffled. How accurate of info that is idk. Best thing I can say is to pull the pump assembly & look (and honestly I'd put a new pump in it anyways, just for peace of mind)

Thanks for your come back. I'm going to buy a new fuel tank and as of right now I'll buy a 90-92 tank. The pump will also be new. Most guys seem to go with a 255 which should push the 36 lbs injectors on my 383 LT1.

I've seen this said multiple places, and now I'm not 100% convinced. I swapped in a '97 LT1 into my (essentially) '92 Camaro and put in a new TPI fuel pump. At the end of two seasons of racing, the engine let go in a big way. I had another engine rebuilt (stock) and just finished installing it. Went to get it dyno'd today and the fuel pressure was not stable and they suggested a new pump. At the parts store I had them compare a '97 with a '92 pump.

Delphi Automotive - In-Tank Electric Fuel Pump - '92 Camaro
Part Number: FE0110
Flow Rate (gph): 20.3 gph
Pressure Rating (psi): 50.76 psi

Delphi Automotive - Fuel Pump And Sender Assembly - '97 Camaro
Part Number: HP10036
Flow Rate (gph): 29.5 gph
Pressure Rating (psi): 50.76 psi

Now, someone mentioned on here about using a vortec pump for a 5.3L swap.

Delphi Automotive - In-Tank Electric Fuel Pump '00 Vortec Truck
Part Number: FE0114
Flow Rate (gph): 34.2 gph
Pressure Rating (psi): 61.64 psi

Those numbers look closer to what an LT1 should be and *IF* it's a direct bolt in swap, that seems to be the winning ticket. Does anyone know for sure?

*edit* Also would the higher PSI require a better than stock fuel pressure regulator?

Re: 83 fuel tank, want electric fuel pump in tank

They all do

3rd gen pumps all interchange in EFI senders
93-98 4th gens used a steel tank which was practically identical to 3rd gens, so their pumps interchange
Ive personally used the 5.0/5.7 vortec pump with my stock swap. Direct fit. Going by the numbers posted, Id suggest it as a budget replacement for TPI, LT1 and mild LSx swaps. All 3 are roughly the same cost, it offers the highest numbers

My 83 was a carb 305. Does my fuel tank have any baffling to keep the pump covered in turns? That's why I'm looking at the fuel pump assembly from AirMotive, it has a baffling around the pump assembly. But you have to cut a 3 1/4" hole in the top of the tank. Looks like a well built product. Still thinking about it.

Re: 83 fuel tank, want electric fuel pump in tank

You do not have the baffling, but it doesnt do much

Baffles were a 1LE option up to 90, then it became standard for all models 90-92

Id use a EFI sender and rock it as-is. The shape of the tank aids in keeping the pump submerged, but really keeping gas in it is the best solution

The plan is to make this a autocross/road course able car. As you know this requires a car to make tight sometimes long sweeping turns. Yes a full tank of gas would work, but while we're in there, we might as well make it right.

Id go with a fuel cell in that case. Grab a 90-92 tank or plastic LS1 tank if fuel cells are out

The plastic tanks hold the pump in a bucket that is perpetually filled with fuel, which outshines simple baffles for extended hard cornering

My pull a part guys don't have any on their lot. But I'll keep an eye out for one.

Pull a part slashes tanks during the fluid draining process. Wish they didnt
