it is not hard at all, you just have to decide how you want to do it. use the stock LT1 wiring and Opti-never-spark, 24X - CNP, Distributor?

personally "what I am running in my 1997 4X4 truck" I would use the TPI that you already have, on the LT, with an updated electronics package. such as a '411 ECU. or just use the TPI ECU for times sake. I have got this down pretty well, Pm Me if ya have questions.

bare in mind that the modded LT1 intake was a dismal fail, the 3rd motor "a 1996 LT1" is still running 1 1/2 years later and has a 1986 TPI on top, makes tons and tons of torque. here is a picture of it on the way in. I am now planning the last phase of the Mod, A new cam, 36LB injectors, and a "built" trans to take the 450ft/lb + torque that it should make.

Be sure to read my swap thread https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-...stock-lt1.html, yours being an 86 Iroc tpi the wiring is already documented in one of my links but if you have trouble wiring it up i can find you all the documents you need. That's if your not paying for a plug and play kit for 800$ Or you could just buy a 500$ intake put a dizzy on and a quadjet and be done.

I'm in the middle of doing the same thing. IMHO, I think the best way to do this is to have a complete donor car. This way you have all that is necessary. If you put yourself on a timetable, this is not going to be fun. Take your time and think out each system. There is a lot of information here in this forum. Just take the time to go through all of it. Take lots of pictures so you can see how things go together. And bag and mark all the bolts and hardware. Oh, and I don't see how you can do this right for under $5000.

Everything you said made sense until you said that. define doing it right? A step by step guide would be helpful, Tbh if i had 5k to spend at the time of my swap i would have did what everyone else did and bought an LS1.

I will say anything over 3500$ is overpriced for an LT1 swap "donor" car with an M6. I paid 1000$ for mine although it has the 4l60e, i drove it 200+ miles home and tore it apart and sold the body for scrap for 300$ No rust on the body or nothing drove great hated the rack and pinion steering tbh the huge steering wheel and dash that's enough to pull the plug.

.
It's the little things that add up. It's the "while I'm in there, I might as well replace it or fix it" attitude that costs you time and money. The choice of whether it's an LS1 or LT1 is easy. The LS1 has much more potential. But I got my LT1 and the donor car for just about nothing. And I'm already familiar with the LT1 as I have one in my Vette. Yeah, I had to buy the 6speed and the hydraulic clutch set up. No matter what engine you pick, you shouldn't just slap it in there without some refurbishing.

As far as a step by step guide, that will be different for everyone. My approach goes like this: I stripped the Camaro right down to the bone, interior and all. Why? I wanted to make sure the body was fit for the swap. Then we started with the fuel tank (needs an electric fuel pump with baffles and new lines). Next will be cleaning and painting the engine bay while the engine is being rebuilt. While the reared is out we decided to rebuild it. We found some cracks in the unibody and bought a welder to fix that problem. (It was cheaper to buy one than have someone come in and do it, besides I always wanted a welder ). That's about as far as we have gotten. When the engine gets home, I plan on installing the clutch assembly and tranny to the engine and put it on the K-member. I will put the engine and tranny in the car from underneath. Then comes the wiring, oh boy.

I have been running Lt1 engines for the better part of 15 years and these motors have a great deal of popotential however one thing that has to be addressed especially since the Lt1 will be already out put new HP bearings in there, new standard volume oil pump use the hi pressure spring, use performance valvesprings, install 1.6 roller rockers with 7/16 studs, flat guide plates and chromoly pushrods. Have the PCM tuned i use www.madtuner.com you will have a smile on your face. Then if you want better performance add a cam and ported heads possibly ditch the opti and use the Ls1 pcm conversion from www.eficonnection.com send your LS1 pcm to madtuner
You will want to think about a real rear end i like the 8.8 from a mustang its a very economical solution 3.73-4.10 are the gears of choice.

Your best off buying a donor car. This way you get every possible thing to run it.

What's the goal here? Are you looking to run a 350 and the LT1 just happens to be accessible, or are you looking to run a specific number and have your heart set on the LT1? If you ask me, an L98 with HSR would be way easier, but the LT1 isn't too hard of a swap if your heart is set on it. I just replaced the LT1 opti-spark on my '96 Corvette, and other than that, the engine is very easy to maintain...

Like I say, this could be an expensive project depending on what you really want to do. I love the shape of the third gen Camaro and I like the LT1.
