Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
thats what i was thinking, ill start poking around at the larger pans to see if the higher volume pan is worth it, i know im atleast getting a new oil pump because im not going to do all this work and have the pump give out, and it was also sifting around in that coolent and oil mix so thats another reason.

Already planning on it, same for the posi 3.73 rear end if I ever find one for a good price. I remember a member here on the board who sells shift kits and rebuild kits for a decent amount, I need to remember him so I can order the kits. I need corvette servos, 3-4 shift upgrader ect.

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
well after coming home sick today i didnt get to go to the garage to work but its probably best since i cant do anything anyways but my freeze plugs and cam bearings shipped out today but iv been reading up on stuff about the engine and head work i need done and i think im going to try and install the freez plugs and remove the cam bearings and re install new ones myself. but i came acrossed an article that popular hot rodding did today about valve jobs on vortec heads and heres a small segmit to it, if anyone wants the full thing i can post it up aswell.
After crunching numbers and half a bag of chips, our fearless crew dove into the dyno room on the quest for knowledge. Several successively higher rpm pulls were made, finally topping out at 6,700 rpm. It’s impressive that the little engine showed no signs of valve float at all. A group of three runs was made and the numbers were averaged in order to reduce any chance of skewing the results by an outlier in the bunch. The happy little mill churned out a respectable 367 lb-ft and 354 horsies. This was with a “factory” valve job consisting of a 30-degree top cut, 45-degree seat, 60-degree bottom cut, and the bone-stock valves.
Three hours is the amount of time needed to finish a dyno pull, pull the top end off a small-block, cut a valve job, flow test a head, reassemble the engine, and make another dyno pull. Ask me how I know. In this second round, the heads were treated to a 35-degree valve job, with the cylinder head having a 15-degree top cut, 35-degree seat, and 45-degree bottom cut. The valves were treated to a 35-degree seat, and 19.5-degree back cut. As expected, the low-lift flow numbers rose, while the upper lift flow numbers suffered slightly. The combination ended up giving up a little midrange torque, but picking up a little up top while widening the rpm range. The results: 363 lb-ft and an equal 363 hp proved the shallow angles could work.

Ive never been unhappy with Summit. Ordered new wheels from them for my truck on Friday, est 6 business days for delivery, they showed up today.
Why was their packaging unsatisfactory?

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
box wasnt sealed properly, i could stick my hand inside the package before cutting the tape and without tearing it, they didnt put any packing material in my box so my stuff was moving around freely getting banged up, and my freeze plug bag came open durning the ship. not the happiest person. does anyone know what that plug is for at the top? and are there are more??? i got 5 plugs just like it in my kit and i have no clue to where they go and i need to know where my oil galleys are at so i can remove them before they get tanked

well might be upgrading the crank anyways.... was mowing the yard today and my girl was in the garage waiting on me and i guess she decided to rotate my block and i have my crank sitting in the block to keep it off the ground and yeah.... it hit the ground. i looked it over for a second to check everything over and it doesnt look hurt or anything so i might have gotten lucky but im worried.

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
i believe its forged but dont quote me, my dad thinks its fine but im soaking it in degreaser so i can do a better inspection tomorrow but im probably going to have it checked, im going to hate to get this engine together and the crank be something that goes out. i was going to try and remove the cam bearings myself and install the new ones but after reading that i could easily not install the new bearings correctly with the oil holes im not going to risk it.

the only thing a dent would affect is the balance, not going to cause premature failure, but if it's out of balance enough you will get a vibration.

Inspected thr crank and it looks fine, I can't even see where it hit so I think I'm safe, sure looks good cleaned up though. But to stop this from happening again I bolted the flywheel to the back of the crank so it's safer I think

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
Well might be going a different route with the trans, was browsing through hawks and noticed they have a 6 speed conversion kit for a decent ammount, need to check in on how hard it is to swap over and where I can go to get the pedals welded in since I don't trust myself doing that. Also need to learn how to drive a manual

But you will need to cut holes in the firewall, drill holes to bolt pedals, run lines for the slave cylinder, ect...

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
If you are doing the swap using factory pedals and a clutch master that would fit a factory 5 speed car all you need to do is cut the hole for the slave cylinder and drill the holes for the little brace that goes over it, the actual t-5 pedal setup itself will bolt right in, if you have the factory carpet still there is actually a little area that would have been removed if installed in a factory 5 speed that just pushes out if you pull it slightly back and look at the sounddeadner, after doing that simply take a felt marker and trace it onto the flywall, it makes a perfect template and everything will line right up.

yeah thats the block, and i know its rusty than i like but the owner told me that all the blocks are suppose to be stripped down and painted black before they leave the shop but since i kept getting screwed around by his worker he just tried to get it back to me. i went through and cleaned the gasket surfaces and the block on what i could and it helped but im not going to paint till i get the block assembled

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
i asked in my ac repair thread.
i got second again in the car show, lot less people this time, 27 cars and 8 trucks. i lost to a stoodabaker that was nicely restored. car ran flawlessly down and back and my fuel mileage is great, i only used a fourth a tank of gas on a 2 hours trip then alittle more than a fourth on the way back, so around alittle more than half a tank for a 4 hour trip of going 65-75 lol. also must say that after i got my car up to 75 for the first time, it got shakey but after driving for a little while it smoothed out and rode smooth.

I did my v6 block orange. It's okay but when I pull the engine out I'm going to spray the engine bay black so I think the silver block, black engine bay, and all black bolts will look sharp. I'm also going with braided lines. And chrome lokar locking dipstick tubs for the trans and oil.

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
well decided im going to go ahead and take my car to kings island which is a 3 hour drive from me. but i also decided that if im going to do this im going to replace that front pump seal so i dont have to worry about it blowing out on me while im on trip. so tonight when i got home around 7, the car went up on stand and out came the tranny, new seal is out and new one is in, and the converter is also in again. took about 2 hours but shes done, just going out tomorrow to put everything back together. i noticed though i somehow lost a lower tranny bolt on the passenger side. will i be okay like this till i can find a new one? its just the lower one but if it needs attention ill find a repalcement as fast as i can. also thinking about replacing the detent cable since im down there aswell since mines stretched and comes out of adjustment after a few months of driving. but yeah. im still working on getting my 350 together so i can slap it in and iv also decided im going to bolt a th350 to it for the peace of mind.

You lost a bellhousing bolt? You'll be fine till you get one. And replace that detent cable now, or you might end up regretting it later.

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
yeah apparently i lost it going down the road or something because its none existent anymore lol. they were all there after my motor swap and after my flywheel swap but im not sure. if its not a big deal i wont worry about it right now. and im worried about the detent after seeing everyone have problems finding the correct one from parts stores and since this motor and tranny wont be staying in long im not really worried about it. the next owner will worry about it lol. it doesnt look like the part is hard to change so if i have to do it ill swap it out.

Got everything buttoned up and good, no more leaks besides the water off my ac. But I have a nasty chunk out if my passenger side front tire.

well got a set of used tires. my uncle sold me a set of 205-70-R15 bridgestone insignias for $40. but he also had a set of firestones there that i keep thinking of but they were alot taller than the ones i currently have. the bridgestones will work for now atleast for my trip. they have about 50% tread left which is about what my tires have on them now, im going to miss my goodyear weatherhandlers though, stock size was 215-65-R15s

well update on the 350, was browsing craigslist and came acrossed a guy selling off a 350 with a rebuild kit and a few other goodies. hes wanting $100 for a newish rebuild kit, its missing alot of the gaskets but most of its there and i want to get felpro gaskets anyways. anyways the kit is a master rebuild kit, includes all the bearings i need, new oil pump, sealed power aluinum pistions, so i think im gonna jump on it.

well going after the rebuild kit sunday, my machine shop chages $6 to put my rods on my new pistons then i need to get a new gasket kit from summit which is like $40 then i can get my block re assembled. im getting some new valves aswell, these are the valves im getting ( http://www.competitionproducts.com/S...ductinfo/8430/ )
but im getting a new toy tomorrow, i found out i could use those long tube headers i bought so im trading them for a holley 650 four barrel carb with an electric choke. so now all i really need is an intake. sadly thats the hardest part to find right now lol

Re: Is this 86 worth this money?
well didnt get the rebuild kit or the holley, that was a major smack in the face to me!!! but its all good now, sold my headers, and so this weekend im getting a rebuild kit, my valve spring kit,and i found a guy locally thats parting out an 82 camaro with a 305 in it, so im going to go snag the front v belt setup off of it, the motor mounts, and the oil filter adapter for $40. i really didnt want the v belts but for the price i wont complain too much. and for now just so i can get my engine in and going im going to get a used f body lt1 cam or an lt4 hot cam so i casn get this bad boy in!!!
