My new Firebird project

Just got this for $70 from a distant kin, delivered to my back yard. I haven't done any research into it, and I'm still looking or the RPO sticker(it's not in the console...any ideas?). The axles and everything are still at the dude's house, getting them tonight, along with the timing chain cover and all the other accesories. The plan is to rebuild the 2.8 to put into my Camaro(daily driver), and put in a 350 or better into this, along with a standard shift tranny. It's got a posi rear-end of unknown gearing.

Next place to look for the RPO code is in the hatch compartment. The door you unlock, it's on the inside of that.

You have your work cutout for you.

Re: My new Firebird project

to be honest, i wouldnt even mess with that thing. way too much work and who knows where it has rust. you wouldnt save any money trying to rebuild that car that cost $70 than buying a rust free $2-3k 3rd gen. good luck with whatever u do though

Re: My new Firebird project

it's actually not as bad as it looks. Replace the fender and windsheild and the body is pretty much done. I haven't been able to find any rust yet; I'll be pulling up the carpet soon. Just got the seats transplanted into my Camaro and they look great.

If the Firebird happens to have rust everywhere or something, then the engine and the posi are still worth the $70 I paid.

Also, I didn't see the RPO sheet in that hatch compartment. Other one contained a perfect condition spare tire, though. I'm about to head out to grab the rest of the rearend. Hopefully pulling the engine tomorrow.

Looks straight, and if it was a 2.8 it couldn't of been dogged on the roads too much. I'd actually like to have something like that parked to work on from the bottom up.

It needs work, but it's definitely a start (assuming no major rust) and for 70 bucks? Awesome. Have fun with it.

Sorry bud, my mistake. Fixed now.

We cleaned up the interior really well last night, then pulled it all out. The carpet was wet and there was a puddle of water in the bottom due to a freak rain shower yesterday; the carpet is currently drying on the hood. The interior is perfect, no rust under the carpet at all. We just got the rear-end parts...what a mess. The guy had removed every single piece from the rear diff, and the Chilton doesn't say anything about putting that back together. Should be a fun day. Anyone got some tips for this?

I did find the first bit of rust: the exhaust is shot. But no matter, it's getting replaced anyways. There's surface rust on a few parts underneath, but nothing a sanding block and POR-15 won't take care of.

Me and a buddy(the one in the picture) are the primary people working on it, and we've separated the car into several stages work.

1) 350 TPI + T5 (estimating two months or so from now)
2) T56 swap (end of year or so?)
3) LT1/LS1 (couple years?)
3) MegaSquirt EFI system (shortly after new engine)

The first step is to just get the car going, so we can diagnose any other issues with it. The suspension is pretty much shot, as is the exhaust. It needs a new brake system as well, which will be a fourth gen rear.

I'll go snap some more pics in a bit. We just figure out how to assemble all the gears for the diff, but we think our axles are too short(they measure 25.5" and don't reach into the diff at all).

9 bolt or 10 bolt? I have a 87 FSM, and can look through it for the diagrams.

Re: My new Firebird project

Guy I got it from showed up and informed me he had given me the wrong axles... they were actually from a Chevy Blazer. -_-

We got the car moved into my car port and a decent wash. Pics coming soon.

We're just going to get an entirely new rear-end. Turns out the carrier isn't a posi at all and the guy was just on crack or something. We'll toss in a fourth gen rear with posi and disc as soon as we find one of decent price.

Because a T-56 usually runs quite a bit and we just want to get it on the road first. A T5 is much cheaper and I may be able to find one laying around a kin's yard.

Paint plans... coat of black again with a nice gloss coat. We washed her up last night and the paint is in amazing condition for sitting for two years. The interior is going black as well, with blood red detailing. I'm going to have the bird painted on the hood in red with silver outlining, and redo all the other birds on the car the same way.

Read my post above for the paint plans.

After we washed her, we couldn't believe how nice the paint still was. Even when I woke up this morning and saw it under natural light, I was still amazed. Some minor dent fixing(aside from the passenger fender/door) and a fesh coat of paint will have the thing almost perfect.

Hoist is getting bought tomorrow and we're yanking the engine and cleaning up the engine bay to prep for a 350. I'll also have some underbody shots then too, since I'll also be buying enough jackstands to support the whole car.

Re: My new Firebird project

Got some updated pictures...

A guy is also coming by tomorrow to get the 700r4 that came out of it, which means I just turned a profit on the car.

I also found some tiny bit of rust... surface rust, though. The driver side strut cap(the metal part) is pretty bad. I'll probably just replace it entirely. The k-member has very slight speckling, but it'll get coated in POR-15 when it's dropped this weekend for a cleaning. The fuel lines also have slight surface rust, but I intend to replace them anyways. Some of the brake lines had their fittings snap off when I was removing the prop valve, so I'm going to replace the whole shebang there as well. The underbody is getting a full coat of POR-15 as soon as I can order it, as well as the rear end, and as stated previously, the k-member.

The 2.8 that came out of it^. Getting rebuilt for my Camaro and is in surprisingly good condition. One piston has a slight scratch, but that's about it. See my thread in the v6 forum if you're interested in the plans.

Wanna talk about a great condition original interior? This would certainly be it! This is the result of several cans of carpet cleaner, a scrub brush, and many hours on my hands and knees.

Another shot. My center console was busted all to heck while removing it, so I'm going to replace it with a 4th gen one.

Engine wiring harness. Some moron hacked quite a few wires up. A lot of the wires have no connectors on them, even more are spliced together with black tape.

The general plan is finally put together for the car now. It's going 3.4 with a 3400/3500 topend with a turbo after that. MegaSquirted. Standard shift transmission(hoping for a T56). LS1 brake system(I installed a 4th gen rear a couple weeks ago). My list of things that need to be done and parts that need to be bought is over a page long now.
