DIY New black interior 89 GTA

Thought I may share some pics and imput about this beauty, I do not own this car, I did the job only.

This car belongs to a friend, it had a terribly dirty grey (velour) interior, front bumper cover was a mess, T-tops leaked, T-top bar was rusted trough, cracked window sweeps, wrong wheels, broken front turn signals, tired rear springs, ... but we decided to do justice!

Re: DIY New black interior 89 GTA

The door panels where a complicated task, I'll post details later.

For the interior plastics I used SEM satin black like many other fellas on this forum, already posted a complete list of SEM products I have already used for this job here https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/post...5-post247.html

Re: DIY New black interior 89 GTA

Is it a real GTA? The fenders are off a Trans Am. Either way, it's a nice car. I love the interior.

Re: DIY New black interior 89 GTA

Thanks for the compliments.
I have some pictures, I will post them, mostly did it in a hurry so I do not have as many as I would have liked.

Headliner fabric is from ClassicIndustries, in order to do the headliner, sail panels and sun visors, 2 rolls were needed. http://www.classicindustries.com/fir.../82141301.html

For repair I used a good contact glue spray and cotton patches.

Can see the grey, old and filthy sail panel fabric, on the floor.

That was the worst part to do and took forever!

The velour was filthy and loose, the vinyl around the velour was coming loose too, around the velour insert.

I got the vinyl for the door panels from rubik818 on ebay, the same place as the seat covers come from, same vinyls.

After painting the vinyl, I cut out the velour inserts, glued the original vinyl back in place with good contact glue, made new inserts with the perforated vinyl and glued them down with good contact glue spray.

I heated and formed some nylon type plastic reinforcements, that I found in a Arts, Crafts & Sewing store, to match the insert joints.

Re: DIY New black interior 89 GTA

Wraped the reshaped nylon reinforcements, with the plain vinyl, used sand paper to rough up and lighter to seal the edges of the vinyl.

Re: DIY New black interior 89 GTA

Trimmed the rear of the decorative strip followed by couple passes of sand paper, then glued on the door panels with good contact glue.

Re: DIY New black interior 89 GTA

Thanks.

After painting the map pockets, I made 3 diagonal cuts in the velour, glued (good contact glue spray) the velour to the foam that is underneath it, wrapped/glued (good contact glue spray) the perforated vinyl over the pockets.

Made the contour with the "hand stitching leather" technique

Re: DIY New black interior 89 GTA

Center console was comming appart badly, contact glue and staples brought it back to shape. One thing I will do some day is put a smooth thin layer of RTV black over the stapled area.

Re: DIY New black interior 89 GTA

Here a pic of the new carpet I ordered from rockauto.com. ACC cutpile 801black with massbacking.
Had it in the shipping box for about 4 weeks, after I layed it in the sun for about 2 hours every wrinkle was gone.
Requires a little trimming and cutting out the holes, pretty easy job.
