Registering a modified vehicle in NJ?
Anybody live in NJ and have an engine swapped third gen which is legally registered and insured?
What was the process? Did you register it as anything special?
My check engine light is on, and may always be. The stupid DMV fails cars for that, so how to deal with this issue? (don't say cut bulb out, fail for that too.)

Re: Registering a modified vehicle in NJ?
what are you looking for in terms of inspection? a standard drive 10 million miles a year inspection? or a limited use inspection?
the old loophole used to be collector vehicle registration. there is no emissions check at the station, but you are limited to 3k miles a year. As of last year you have to prove the car is rare or collectible to get this inspection, it requires info being sent in from a car group or agency verifying that the car is a collectors item.
Aside from that, you cant put an older motor into a newer car. If the car was fuel injected, you cant use a carb.
If the cam is not too radical, the car has all the emissions equipment intact and it passes the sniffer, your fine. If its something else, i dont know.
I guess the biggest question is what did you swap from/to
Im currently using the collectors registration, but as of last year, its a lot harder to get. I have to have mine renewed in January.
As for the check engine buld, seriously, take the bulb out if thats what it takes. They dont scan the computer of the older cars to the best of my knowledge. If you pass, put it back in or just leave it out.

do you still have all the emmission parts on the motor? air pump and injection? You may be able to pass as it is. Worth a shot anyway.

Re: Registering a modified vehicle in NJ?
Just a motor w/ alternator, shorty headers etc.
Some how the guy before me passed the sticker is good until 2/2010 but the paperwork is from a private facility, so I'm thinking he knew somebody.
So when I go to register the vehicle, all I do is register it like a normal car then and worry about "knowing somebody" for inspection down the road i guess.

without the emission equipment, your going to have to know somebody who doesnt care about their inspectors licence. Its possible they swapped the motor after they had the car inspected.

Re: Registering a modified vehicle in NJ?
The emissions portion of the test says:
nox 1046 actual 33
hc 140 actual 31
co% 0.79 actual 0.15
c02% actual 15.0
0² actual 0.0
RPM actual 1430
I mean, that's a clean running car if that was actually done on this car? you think its possible?

Re: Registering a modified vehicle in NJ?
anything is possible, but like i said, the motor could have been swapped AFTER that test was performed.
You might pass flying colors, i know a few 4th gen guys who have passed the NJ sniffer test with no cats.
I think the issue would be the visual inspection, if the station cares to check under the hood. I say go for it and see what happens.

Re: Registering a modified vehicle in NJ?
That check engine light is a problem too. As long as thats on they'll never pas s you no matter how clean your running. So you'll have to do exactly what you said earlier and find someone who would pass it. But the fines pretty big I hear it's 10k now and there inspection license can get pulled so it's not gonna be easy.
