Knock at cold idle

Alright i posted this aswell over at the Gen engine board. But i love to have more then one look at the problem

Alright, engine will kock at idle this knock sounds like a rock in a can shakeing, It only does this when the car is cold and it will stop making the knock at around 200 degrees. The idle is set at the first line after the 500 rpm mark. (around 650ish) What would be the cause of this knock? Now i do know that if i advance the idle to around 1000 rpm, the knock will stop. This really gets me fustrated.

no telling where it's coming from?

sounds bad

oiling problem probably, maybe a spun bearing on the crankshaft causing rod knock

Sounds like its coming from the top end/ Near the frount of the car, Ive heard that some knock is normal for the 2.8s to knock at idle, but i dont think this is a normal knock. However, now the car is also doing the Searching for the idle thing, It will start up, and go from around the 650 ish rpm to 500 and back up. Perhaps if i run adld on the car and get the knock couts i can get more info, Does anybody have detailed instructions on building one one of the cables?

sure it's not just some rocker arms out of lash ticking? when it gets hotter the metal will expand, bringing the valvetrain back into alignment.

at this point i have no clue what it is, other then that its a knock, is their any way to truly figure out where the knock is comming from? It sounds like its comming from the top end, but im not 100% sure that is comming from there.

take a long screwdriver to it and start putting it against stuff with your ear pressed to the handle

or you can go invest in one of those automotive stethoscopes, they're hella cheap and mine has helped me out many times.

I was poking around in there with it one day and said to my lady "man, my alternator sounds like total crap, like the bearings in it are hurting"

sure enough it went out about a month later

haha, Well i finaly figured it out, Its not even coming from the engine it sounded like it was the engine from inside (havent had time to check until tonight) But when i lifted my hood up, Long behold, No knocking from the engine compartment... It seems my the hanger for the exast near the cat is loose, seems i hit harder then i thought when i bottumed out on a speed bump
