Smog Check
Rocklin Automotive is proud to announce that we are now an Official Smog Check Station. Now that this goal has been executed, we're moving along to make more plan towards dyno tuning. We will be installing anchors to the floor. Anchors should be installed by next week. We're awaiting for the call from the salesman for the dyno program.
Car show with dyno pulls is definitely within reach....

Smog prices for 3rdgen members are 39 + cert.
For a "smog" It'll run ya about $30,000, its called buy yer own smog machine.
BTW thats also about what the fine is for a "smog"

Dang smog... Sorry but let me vent. I anticipated failing smog because of a bad CCC carb so I bought one for $350 on Ebay. Put it on and took it to the mechanic so he could adjust it with his exhaust gas analyzer. Fails miserably, and goes down as a gross polluter. Adjusts it, gets it close but finds that it needs a TPS and fuel mixture solenoid. Trys it again and gets even worse. Figures it's the air control valve. No big deal right? Small little piece of plastic with two solenoids...$600.00 from the dealer. I found one through my NAPA dealer for $400.00 I'm going to have $1100 into a smog test before I even get the certificate. Thougth I'd share that. Misery loves company...

I have to say with 230k+ on my IROC's 20 year old original powertrain, I expected to fail, but I passed legally. And I burn 1 quart of oil between oil changes. The cat was newer and I took it in on the warm side and left it running until they pulled it in. Sorry to hear about your smog trouble. To bad the 20 year smog exemption doesn't apply. My car just turned 20!

Are there an plans to make it a 20 or even a 25 year exemption? That wuld be awsome for me. Then I won't have to keep these damn Alaska plates on the car.LOL

I think if the bunch you are thinking about getting elected does, we might be seeing large cash incentives for any car older than 15 years being crushed. They have tried that before and it didn't fly, hopefully it won't again.

My car was reported as a gross polluter a few years back. I get the DMV mailing stating that they'll give me $500 for the car. I have a 90 sable that isn't worth a damn that I couldn't sell for that much. I think I'll invest $40 in a smog test that I'll make sure my car can't pass and see if the state will pay me $500.

I forgot to say that we got $1,000.00 for my wife's 1991 Toyota Tercel. It was a gross polluter and just like your situation.

While the general idea of getting rid of a lot of the broke down pieces of crap on the road today is really appealing, i am just paranoid, I guess, of what this may imply towards our beloved hobby/lifestyles. Done right we could all benifit greatly from the change such as more cars in junkyards and pick and pulls. But I fear, as with many other issues, it will be done wrong and result in many painful automotive losses along with the cleanup. Just the perspective of an old-school gearhead obsessed with junkyards and fast cars.

I have my car registered in Alaska right now and there is a waiver program here. If you car can't pass smog you can pay for a 10 dollar sticker and agree to only drive your car between April and November. Which with all the snow, ice,sand and gravel, is the only time people making serious power care to drive anyhow. You can get the sticker regardless of year make or model. I now somehting like that would never fly in CA...too bad.

That is awesome! I wish they did have something like that here. With the snow and road salts and cinder rocks during those off months, I rarely ever drive in those months either. I would just shut them down for winter projects every year. Ca. does have historic vehicle tags which make you smog exempt, but I think they limit mileage to 1000 miles a year with a hefty overage fee, or something like that. I will get in touch with some friends that work DMV and see what is really out there for Ca., now I am curious.

I'd say that there are a number of things I do to ensure a good test. Normal maintanence is key. If your car needs the basics(plugs, wires, themostat, etc.) replace them as needed. I only run Chevron Supreme w/Techroline as a rule. I had a proper tune done when I did my "bolt ons" along with the newer o2 sensor and cat. I also run the "Pass or don't pay" stuff through my car before I go to test. As mentioned before, get the cat good and hot before you test. Just my .02

Let's just hope that Cali dosn't attempt to copy one of England's major cities. since they couldn't kill off hot rods with emissions, the new law is to charge higher fuel consuming vehicles, get this: $50 bucks a day tax. Yep, anyone who has an SUV or a gas-guzzler vehicle will pay thousands of dollars a year as an enviromental penalty of ownership. I'll have to go back and find the article so I can remember what city is sponsoring this issue.
Have any of you tried to encourage your engine to pass smog by running 'Sea-Foam' directly into your intake through a vaccuum line???

go to clean pipes off fulton ave james for test only
great guys when bennie and i ran SMOG D we used to send all the test onlys to him.
tell them to do a preheat on the cat too or "dry off the tires" haha not illegal just helps it along

You've got the right idea. The state will pay up to $1,000.00 to voluntarily retire a failed smog car, but one requirement is that you are the registered owner. Sometimes the links don't work so here's the info:

yah, the states pocket is pretty bare, the local ref is still open 1 day a week.each week there is a line of ricers with ref tickets.

It USED to be a rolling 30 year exemption, so in 2008, all cars made in 1978 or older would not have to be smogged.
But thanks to Governor Arnold, he signed the law in 2005 that stopped the exemption at cars made in 1975 or older.

Yes I'm sure it was Arnold, I followed that bill pretty closely. Jay Leno is a friend of Arnold's and Jay told him to veto it, but he signed it anyway. It was in 2005 because 30 years back is 1975 and that's the cutoff point for the exemption.

I don't think it was a rolling exemption because when I began modifying my first car (1962 Falcon-it was "cheap" and I was broke) back in 1996 a friend of mine who ran a classic car dealership suggested that I check out Ca smog laws before I got too crazy. So I did and at that time in July of 1996 the cutoff year was 1973, anything newer had to follow the smog laws relative to the year the car was manufactured. It stayed consistant at 1973 until that bill was signed by Arnold in 2005, when it was changed to 1975. Also in 1998 i purchased a 1973 Chevy 1/2 ton p/u and DMV did not require a smog (living in Orange County, Ca. at the time). If it was a rolling 30 year exemption the cutoff year would have been 1968 and I would have been screwed, that thing had a VERY hot 454 in it.

Yes it was a rolling 30-year exemption starting in 2003, so '73 and older was exempt. In 2004 it became '74 and older, and in 2005 it became '75 and older. Then Arnold signed the bill that stopped the exemptions at '75 and older.

Well, that explains how it got from 1973 to 1975, between 2003 and 2005 I was going through a lot of personal things (i.e. getting married, building a house, and beginning a new major career path), so my car hobby had to take a back seat for a while. All I know is that when the cars went into the garage in early 2003 the smog age was 1973, as it has been since I began back in 1996. When I started again in 2005 I had just heard about Arnolds new bill. I had heard rumors about the rolling exemption, but no smog stations could confirm or deny it. Not like it really matters anyway, both of my cars are required to be smogged, the cut-off year is 1975. end of story.
