engine update
Hey guys, I just figured that I'd give you guys an update with some pics.
For those that don't know, my 305 decided to go through the oil pan, which is the reason for the engine and tranny to be pulled and a 350 to be built in it's replacement.
This shows the pieces that blew through the oil pan.

This pic shows the oil pan.

This pic shows the progress that I've done on the prep, which is nearly done.
Well, I guess this one will have to stay a link because it has parenthases in it

If these don't work, go to http://oldbluez.cz28.com/photos.html
I have more on that same page, and will try to keep only a few pics on here at a time.

can you tell me about the conditions of which that engine met its demise? rpm? broken piston?

It had a severe rod knock that I noticed about 10 miles outside of Colorado Springs on I-25..could hear it over the radio.. it took me a second to realize what it was, then turned the radio up and limped home as best I could. The knock was so loud, you could hear it from inside the apartment over the TV. I tried to not move it until we got the trailer, but the apartment complex decided to repave the roads, so I was forced to move it. When I put it back after the re-paving, I pushed the gas too hard and got the new trophies you see there.
I'm pulling the engine on saturday so I can tear down the block to get to the bottom of it and see what happened. Oh yeah, I was having some oil pressure problems too.

scary, the L98 coming out of the 91 is the same way. It only has a slight knock that you can't hear until it warms up then it continues to get worse. I has not been driven and I hope to salvage it after I pull it.

Unless it's a headgasket, my block has a hole in the water jacket. So it's probably not salvagable.
I pulled the oil drain plug yesterday to get rid of the remainder of the oil (what didn't end up on the street) and got about 5 quarts of coolant....definately wasn't expecting that (although I guess I should have).

It's not all bad. I was planning on building a 350 for it anyways, just not this soon. I did have the rearend mad bullit proof in January preparing for all the power I want to make.
Rear axle:
28 spline moser axles
zexel-torsen SLP take out posi
3.42 moser gears
I'm going to basically do a stock 350 rebuild but use upgraded bottom end components and am looking at the comp XE268 blower cam and stock L98 heads that I might take the dremmel too. In the future I will put on some bad *** heads but for now I'm just trying to get something built so I can drive my car again.

The bolt was the first thing to fail. That's why ARP is always mentioned along with intended RPMs above 5500.
That didn't happen cruising down I-25. The damage was initiated at the above mentioned high RPMs.
So, come clean: What had you been doing?

The engine didn't blow on I-25, that's just when I heard the knock and decided to park it. It blew in the parking lot around 4500 rpms. I don't know where the knock came from, I just have some theories. I'm hoping when we get it torn down, I'll be able to figured out.
The drive in town after I-25 wasn't exactly easy. It's about 15 miles from the on-ramp to my apartments, and I stalled at all the red lights. The tranny is toast and the last road leading to my apartments is inclined, but not enough to be considered a hill. I actually had to put my flashers on because it stalled going up the road. Then I got it started again and was around 4500 rpms and going something like 3 mph.
That's why I planned on just parking it.

I was assuming the knock started when the bolt failed. From what can be seen of the bearing mating surfaces, there doesn't appear to be rotating wear marks, which would indicate that the bearing inserts weren't the failure point (i.e., it wasn't low on oil pressure/supply, wearing out the bearing and causing the knock).
I've seen at least one engine failure that was caused by a transmission failure. This was back in the mid-80's, guy had a '77 Monte that wouldn't move in "D", but would go if in "1". So, he drove it on I-80 in "1". What he didn't realize is that once he got it going in "1", all he had to do was shift up and it would have operated mostly normally. Oh, well, meant I got the car cheap.

That's interesting.
Well, I got the engine and tranny out. I have the tranny seperated, but need to run to home depot to get three more bolts for the engine stand. Anyone is more than welcome to come over and take a look at it. Once I get it on the stand, I'm pulling the oil pan off and will start the teardown.
303/798-9227 and I'm near broadway and c-470.

Jesse,
Make sure you get a good grade of bolts for your stand so they do not snap. Just for safety.

I got stage 5, ACE didn't have anything higher (that I saw). I hope that'll work.

Ok, so Marc (91RamAirFormula) came over and we got the engine/tranny out on the 12th. Over the past few weeks, I've been slowly picking at the engine tearing it down. I've been real busy because I started working at Dish Network and summer school started up.
Anyways, I have taken a lot of pictures, just have not loaded them up to the internet yet due to lack of time or will.
I have it stripped down to the short block now and pulled the heads off today. I bent the cylinder #1 valves a bit, and if you couldn't tell, both #1 and #2 rods broke. The #2 rod smacked the cam and broke it into three pieces and I have a chunk of it. All of the piston tops look good except the #2 and #7, they have a whole bunch of carbon on them. That's probably from blow by. (just a guess) The bottoms of the #1 and #2 cylinders are badly damaged from the rods knocking. And the block has a hole in a water passage somewhere. Everything else looks good (whatever's left).
Salvagable parts from block:
pass head
dvr head (maybe)
of course all accessories and intake/exhaust parts
that's about it
I definatly had to destroy everything when it blew!
