WTB: 22-2600 stall converter for '86 IROC 700R4
I am getting close to buttoning up my iroc project. It is now time for my tranny re-build

I have $700 to buy a tranny, and converter.

if you just have a converter for me i need one for 86&newer with electronic's.

If someone within 5 or 6 hours of me can help me out, please let me know

i don't think 700 is going to get you much of a brand new trans or get a built up one rebuilt. You can go to autozone, etc and purchase a 1998 S10 4.3L torque converter which will stall 2200 behind a v8. I put one of those into several 700R4s for camaros and they're great for a budget converter with more stall. I think in parts alone for a trans you're going to be at 400 or so after shift kit and rebuild kit. Possibly find a used built up trans, I know everyone is going to recommend jimmy's trans and figure way over a grand for everything. ~waiting on jeremy to say JIMMY~

well the guy i deal with down here- he builds many race transmissions for local racers- told me $650 to rebuild it with oe parts, w/o converter, and me buying the shift kit.

But i was looking at buying a rebuilt kit from Hughes race performance for $359 that has all steels, clutches, and kevlar band. as well as allows you to make the valve body manual or auto.
so then i'd just have to get a converter and have Jay put it all together, which im figuring might be about another $200..- giving his price quote..

what do you think?

if this is mainly a strip car i would skip the 700R4 all together and get a TH350 with a shift kit and a good rebuild on it. Then a stall matched to your setup and be on your way for hundreds less. Not to mention it'll actually hold together compared to a overdrive trans. Otherwise it looks like you're in the $1200 range without a super nice converter either

Properly built 700 should take just as much abuse as a properly built 350 :-)

Key word is always that "properly".

Jimmys will run ya about $1k for the trans and figure 700$ for the converter since he only uses continental or precision.

U can do it for cheap, but I sincerely recommend starting with a existing performance 700r4(like from a tpi car) and upgrading the servo and boost valves and preferably doing it using the Trans GO shift kit.

Pays to go with the Kevlar band and machine it for the extra 4th gear clutches.

Be wary of people building performance OD trans. Find one who has car sin the filed whether you go to Jimmy or not. Most people here dont bother to check things like the TV pin for the proper length. Its the number one failure of 700 trans from 89-91, especially when you add heads and a cam and the trans goes bye bye for no other reason. Any clown can rebuild a trans, very few clowns can build trans and know them well enought to make them truely last in heavy duty environment.

Best thing I can tell u, is to educate yourself and find out what other people are doing and how they set it up and check it out before the rebuild even starts.

later
Jeremy
