How to Drive...

Simply put, on my 1992 camaro z28 what is the best way to launch it shift it whichever.

Its a 350 auto and stock right now...and really i cant tell you worth **** how to drive it to get the best performance. I wanna take the car to the track this spring but i wanna know how to drive my car first.

Its better to just leave the car in Drive then to manually shift it right?

From a stop do u just mash the pedal or give it a little gas to prevent wheel spin? how does it work normally. Do u hold the gas and brake to its max rpm before it starts powerbraking to launch?

Is there really a correct and fastest way to doing this.

Sorry i sound really pathetic asking this but i just wanna know.

P.S i would be out trying this from learning but i have a broken tranny mount and cant get it fixed till next week.

you can brake stall it abit, but on a stock car it might only get you 1600rpms before the converter locks up and the tires spin.

you can do that, and let off the brake quick, and hit the gas. but you cant just mash it else you will spin. the trick is getting enough gas to prevent wheel spin in order to accelerate the greatest.

when my tranny was stock with stock converter on my L98, i brake stalled it to about 1500rpms as best i could and let off the brake. alot of gas caused massive spin and slow off the line acceleration.
I found out with practice that doing the brake stall, and hitting the gas enough to cause the tires to chirp/spin for just a second made my best seat-of-the-pants feel. its kinda tricky to get it just right. the tires only spin for like a second before they hook up on the road, and the car takes off. that little bit of spin helped my rpms jump up a bit and sorta acted like a higher stall converter.

Brake stalling may help slightly. The best thing it will do is put a load on the driveline. With everything "stock" leaving off an idle will normally work just as good.

Not sure how the EFI will work but with a carb, if you try to launch at too high an rpm, you'll already be past the accellerator pump shot and the car will bog slightly off the line while a launch from an idle will be better.

As for shifting, you might run slightly quicker if you manually shift it but in a bracket race consistency wins so let the car shift itself. Leave it in D not OD.

A TPI system struggles above 5500 so that's about the max the engine can do. If you chose to manually shift, try to hold it in gear until about 5200. Without a shift kit, the shifts will be slow and sloppy and it probably won't go into the next gear until the engine hits 5500 anyway. You can't rely on the factory tach as accurate plus it's very hard to watch a tach and the track at the same time. A shift light is the best way to manually shift. Light comes on, shift. You concentrate on everything else but you can't miss the bright shift light.

The red line on the tack isn't the rpm limit of the engine. It's supposed to be used as a shift point indicator. The shift point is also lower than the engine's red line.

yeah, stock the shifts are gonna be abit slow. my 1-2 wasnt bad, about 200rpms delay and fairly strong, but 2-3 was about 500rpms delay and weak. LOL it eventually started to not engage 3rd untill you let off the gas and that day it died. only a 1-2 auto tranny LOL

Mines a 1-2 auto. I shift from low to high around the 1/8 mile mark but I'm starting to short shift first gear to get into high gear quicker.

1.76 first gear
1:1 high gear

What if you just rev it up in neutral and then put it into drive? Will that get a good launch, or would you have to go pick up pieces of your tranny off the road?

Might want to get some quotes on rebuilding your 700R4 before you try that.

with those gear ratios, you can live on the street. LOL i had a 3.06 first, and a 1.62 second with 2.77s in the back, i still hit 3000rpms going 40mph LOL
