Differences are negligible as far as power numbers go. T/A's and Z/28's are always a touch heavier because they're usually optioned a bit better and have GFX, but this is made up for with the fact that Z's and T/A's have lighter wheels and better brakes (as a rule).
T/A vs. Z/28, usually sees the Z28 as the winner, due to *slightly* better power/weight ratios.

Yes the weight makes them faster and the TPI Camaros have a better air intake design that makes them faster also.

Uh, wrong. At least from what I've read. Everything I've EVER read on thirdgen Camaros vs. Firebirds the, TA wins. This is due to the aerodynamic drag that results after about 45MPH, where the TA begins to catch up on the early jump the Camaro's get.
Don't flame me, I'm just stating that every article I've read says this.

The cars are so close stock(except perhaps in 87)it depends more on prooduction tolerances(a fully loaded strong GTA could be faster then a stripped weak IROC) and options. (A fully loaded IROC 5.7 with leather and T's should not be faster then a stripped Formula 350),also the Firebirds have slightly better aerodymamics, and usually equal or excede the Camaro in MPH,the but yeah on the average you could say that a Camaro because of its better intake and usually lighter weight then a T/A,GTA(they are not usually lighter then the Formulas though)is the slightly faster (.1-.3)of the 2 when stock.

I'd have to say most third gen Camaro's are a touch faster from what I've read. I'd also have to mention that most 4th gen T/A's are faster than the 4th gen Camaro's....... neither is a big enough difference to REALLY notice while driving. In my opinion, of course.

The LS1 couldn't beat the LT1? Either Z was modded, or the driver of the WS6 was crappy. The Ws6 shoulda eaten the z for lunch. I just watched a 2000 WS6 tear up a 2000 Z28 Saturday night also. They both let up at 150 though.

Nothing short of driver error would let a stock LT1 take a stock LS1 (assuming same trannys, and I'm not so sure a auto LS1 couldn't take a 6spd LT1 either). I've ridden along on several LS1 vs LT1 runs (same tranny in both) and there is no comparision really. Pretty big difference...

Having owned a couple LT1 cars and an LS1 car, let me say that there is quite a difference. All were 6 speeds. My '97 Z28 ran 13.88@101 stock. It made 278 rwhp/303 rwtq with a K&N FIPK (cold air) and a FlowMaster American Thunder cat back. My '98 ran 13.36@106 stock and made 316 rwhp/330rwtq with a SLP 2OTL cat back and Whisper lid. Some say the LT1 makes more torque down low, well it does below 2000 rpm. Even then we are talking less than 20 ft/lb. When racing how much time do you spend below 2K? Anyway, to answer the original question, the two cars are so close in performance that neither is always faster than the other, based on like years/options. Production tolerances offer more variation here than anything else besides the driver. Stock for stock and everything else being equal, an LS1 A4 will always beat a LT1 M6.
