how hot does your oil get?

I just installed a bunch of autometer guages in my 87. it regularly does track days. I like my new guages so much, i'm going to add an oil temp one and a diff temp one....the electric ones go to 250....the mechanical ones go to 280....my 86 corvette- with no oil cooler would go to 300! then the red light came on! my car has a cooler in front of the radiator.......anyway- is anybody measuring oil temp?

Yeah it usually stays close to coolant temp.

Re: how hot does your oil get?

If his stays close to his coolant temp than i'm going to say he's not doing track days or his coolant is overheating. It's not uncommon for a small block chevy to reach 300* oil temp during a track event. You definitely dont want to run it that hot so an oil cooler is a must for a road raced/track car. I measure my oil temp in a port in the block directly above the oil filter. I have an oil cooler on my car and since the oil cooler install, the temperature has not gone over 240*, even during 25 minute track sesssions holding nothing back and the outside air temp in the 90's

Re: how hot does your oil get?

Also, I used this gauge from autometer as the range goes up to 340. Obviously mine doesn't run that hot, but I wanted a lot more than a gauge that maxs out at 250. The peak and warning functions are very nice to have. After a session on track, I pull into the pits, hit the peak memory button and it shows me what the max temp the oil temp went up to. No need to sit and stare at the gauge when you should be driving instead

Re: how hot does your oil get?

wow that's quite the guage! i like it! i recently installed all autometer gauges- i went with the phantom series- white background....so when i went shopping for that model of guage, they didn't show one like that....they had a mechanical one that went to 300, but no electric one that went that high. I will need to look again. maybe i just missed it. as for mounting it, i've got an LT1 from a 92 vette. it has an oil level sensor that i "think" i can just unthread and put the new sensor in....it also has another 2 wire sensor right above the oil filter. so i guess i've got choices...

Yup, i'd say either of those locations should work just fine for you

Here is a link to the cooler I used: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ear-81610erl

5'' x 15.25''. I chose this one based on where I wanted to locate the cooler. I did have to cut the front bumper some in order to put it where it would receive adequate air flow.

In this picture you can somewhat see on either side of where the front license plate goes, the power steering cooler on the right, and the oil cooler on the left. Both receive great airflow through those openings, and dont hinder the cooling efficiency of the radiator at all.

Between the added capacity from the oil cooler and lines, and the canton road race oil pan, my 350 is bathing in nearly 8 quarts of oil now! I have to think it's thanking me

Re: how hot does your oil get?

i have a similar setup, only slightly different shapes. Mine are pressed tight to the ac radiator. my ps fluid used to boil over without the cooler

Nice setup! Since I've upgraded to decent brakes I've been thinking about taking my car out on a road course. One of the things I was worried about though was the increased oil and PS temps. What are you using for a power steering cooler?

Re: how hot does your oil get?

that smaller cooler on the right is for power steering. I forget exactly which one it is but it's an Earls brand, stacked plate cooler. It's a little on the small side but it does the trick for me. If I were to do it again I'd probably go a little larger. Summit racing website lists tons of them, just measure to see what you can fit and go from there. I run Redline powersteering fluid also, which seems to help.
