My car is down hard too...

My car overheated on the way home from work last night, and by the time I got home it was steaming bad, and leaking water (probably just the overpressure blowoff). Now its overheating about a minute or so after you start it, and it starts steaming a minute later. It only takes a couple minutes to get into the red on the temp guage.

I've checked the oil, plenty of that and none leaking. I've checked the coolant, plenty of that and none leaking (until the car overheats). The water doesn't even seem to be getting hot in the radiator or elsewhere in the cooling system, just the engine is getting hot.

Is this indicative of a failed water pump? That's the only thing I can think of that would produce so little water circulation that it boils in the engine but stays cool in the hoses/radiator/etc.

Any and all help would be appreciated! Thanks

Check the stat first to see if it is stuck closed but it sounds like a water pump.

Those are about your only two options, both are easy and cheap luckily.

Car: for now i have a 79 firebird that had a toasted 301 (imagine that!)
Engine: well i *had* a 301, but there is a pontiac 350 on the stand to get me on the road again and a 428 after that :D
Transmission: th350
check the rad!

maybe your radiator is full of crud and needs to be cleaned out, check the timing. when was the last time you did anything with the emissions bs? could be something like that.

also, check and make sure there isnt a bunch of crap in the fins of the radatior. my dad's p/u was overheating, turned out that the radatior had a lot of bugs and **** in the fins, the air just wouldn't go through.

whatever the case check the cheapest stuff first.

Did you read his siggy?
I'm new to Camaro ownership, but I'm lovin' it!

I'm not slamming you, just seeing if you saw his whole post. That's why we need to help him out. He's new to the car, not sure how to diagnose the car yet. Silly goose!

Yeah, that's a good idea, I got a Haynes manual as soon as I got the car, and I'm trying to find a shop mmanual for it. I have Haynes and the shop manual for the 89 Probe GT I have owned for the last couple years, and I can diagnose pretty much anything on that car. I don't know where to even find the major internal components in the Camaro yet, but I'm learning quick now, lol.

I'd be happy to take that chiltons off your hands if you are done with it. Is it in good shape? How much for it?

Thanks for the assistance everyone.

it's free

i'd just give you the chiltons (if i can find the damned thing), it's in ok condition. all the pages are there. but it's got a little grease on some of it (used it a lot when i rebuilt the 305). i'll have to look for it (shop is a mess) if i find it i'll just let you have it. you'll have to pay me back for the cost of getting it there, (probably 2 bucks) and that's it.
