89 firebird
A friend of mine has a 1989 firebird ssa , i been bugging him for years to sell it to me. I've finally got him on the ropes. It's been parked for several years, he said it ran, then he couldn't getting it running,so he parked it. He thought maybe a pissed off room mate might have sabotaged it.
It's unmolested, interior is good , the body's straight, but looks like a critter is setting up home under the hood with the insulation,so it really needs snatched for the jaws of death. I'd like to get it road worthy and use it as a daily driver/commuter. Difficult, but not an insurmountable task I'm hoping.
It has a 2.8 v6, 5 speed in it, what would the sequence be to get her running. Are injectors ,fuel pump going to be a problem from sitting so long? brakes, clutch, electrical, Thanks

Car: 88' IROC Z.
Engine: 305 TBI.
Transmission: T-5 5 Speed manual.
Axle/Gears: Stock 3.08's I suspect.
I picked my 88 IROC basically off the side of a mountain. Sat for what the guy claimed to be 7 months, but the tags had expired in 08. I just picked it up last year. A new (although looking back, unneccesary) fuel pump, sending unit, and slave cylinder and she was road worthy again. Now she's my daily driver.

Thank You so much, i realize that each car is different and i won't really know till i tear into it, but i figgered someone must have crossed this bridge before, and spending needless money on parts is something i don't need to do.
The thing i do like about the car is the straightness of it, and the availability of aftermarket parts, and the exchangeability of OEM parts. Greg

I've got the TBI 305 v8 so when i got mine to my house, i had my uncle pour some gas into the carb while i turned the motor. It fired up, but wouldnt stay running unless we kept pouring. We replaced the fuel filter, but still nothing so we dropped the tank and replaced the pump and sending unit. But after we got it all done and put back together, i thought back and i think the hose leading from the pump to the fuel lines had melted away.

Re: 89 firebird
She's off the Farm and home now. Tags expired in 06, so she's been sitting awhile. we'll have some bonding time today, a little more romancing of her so she can set her talons a little deeper, before I try to get her running and become frustrated with her.
I got an Album of the rescue pics.https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/album.php?albumid=7584
The work is manning up for the summer around here, so I'm hoping to get the old girl transformed into a road worthy daily driver in the next month.
Thank You for this Forum, it has, and will be a great help! Greg

Re: 89 firebird
Thanks, she is a beauty, after some time together yesterday, I'm loving it. the rest of my herd consists of several Internationals, 1954 pickup, 1956 4x4 pickup, 1956 Travelall, also a 1965 Buick Special Convertible, and 1976 Triumph Spitfire.
As you can tell, i mostly play with old pickup's and mid 60 GM's , so I'm a little leery about diving into a computer/relay driven car that's been sitting for a decade. I'm afraid it's going to be a gremlin ridden , wild goose chasing quest, but here goes nothing. Cover me , I'm going in.

Looks like a good solid body. I would like to see some more pix of it when it's cleaned up.

Oh yeah. A real gas. (huh huh?) Just to warn ya, when I put my tank back together, something didn't align right or something because my filler hose sits a wee bit too low

Re: 89 firebird
I've added some more pics. I didn't plan on a total tear down, but the more I dig, the more I wanna make sure things are right.
Found a jumper wire from the Ignition switch's yellow wire to the purple wire on the clutch safety switch. The insulation on the wires was stripped, and the jumper just wrapped and taped on. The Key didn't have a resistor, but has a little orange plug. So I don't know if somethings by-passed or what?
On top of that, as I was cleaning the engine bay, I kept taking off brackets and pumps till I was so far in that I figgered the water pump should be changed too. That of course lead to ,"I better check the Timing Chain."
So here I am, engine apart, interior apart, and I'm hoping I can get it back together. The good news is my parts came in, I will spend most of tomorrow with reassembly. Wife will be out of town, G-kids won't be over, I'll turn off the phone and just become one with the car.
I have thoroughly enjoyed researching the depths of TGO, what a wealth of information! Thank you all for your collective knowledge!
