I was thinking of buying the latest generation RX-7 that came out in the early to mid 90's. If I do get one it'll be in at least a couple of years (want to "finish" building my Z28). I was wondering if you knew of any problems that plagued it. I've heard that it had A LOT of electrical problems (a former friend used to work at Mazda). But that's just one person's opinion.
Are parts really expensive and hard to find? thanks!

the latest ones (92-95) are sweet as hell
but the problem is that they tend to be about a 80k mile motor
as far as elect problems not sure with those years
problem with them is due to the boost and if you run crappy gas you get detonation and these cars do not like detonation at all
and also ppl tend to put mods onto the car that up the boost and airflow and forgot that the car needs more fuel so.... more air but no more fuel equals lean and that will make for detonation
if you do the mods right and make sure you have enough fuel your motor should last for a little longer then 80k though
just most ppl do not take care of the car like they should
these things NEED to have the oil changed every 3000 miles
need to have the rad flushed once every year or two (unless you run evans NGP coolant)
www.evanscooling.com I would go there and check there stuff out.
for the most part you just take care of it like you should do to any car and you should be ok
so far 171k on my N/A motor still kicking strong. just having a problem with the fuel right now. I think I have a messed up injector.
I know I'm prolly scaring you away from the car but they honestly are not that bad
again most there bad rep comes from ppl who think they do not have to take care of the car like you can get away with on a piston motor. so they change the oil every 10-15k miles or forgot to flush the coolant you know crap like that.
you take care of the car (that doesn't mean drive like a grandma though since these cars are made to be driven hard and even helps keep things clean) it will last a while
just remember if you get one fuel first then do the rest of your mods
I know mine 86-91 (they did have a 92, lucky japan got it though and not us grrr) there are problems with elect stuff but it is like your clock will flicker on on off or the heat unit will quit working
most can be fixed by doing a cold solder on it and then it will last for some time.
easy fix.
if you want a car that can last for a while get a 2nd gen n/a
200k+ miles not uncommon
you should really have to much of a problem with parts as long as you take care of the car though if you buy dealer go with your vasoline. they will rip you off
only place I really would go to buy parts for these cars are from
www.ebay.com
www.thepartstrader.com
www.mazdatrix.com
www.racingbeat.com
most the parts from them will be ok
and these cars do not tend to break parts often since they are built kinda tough
but if you are set on getting a thirdgen the one to look for is a 93 R1
they have the stiff susp that can pull .99g (almost that of the new z06, about a 67-68 on the slalom
0-60 I have heard 4.7-5.3
1/4 at about 13.8
but they are so easy to mod since they are turbo
just remember FUEL FUEL FUEL
if you have other question or I didn't really give you enough info just let me know
but trust me you get one you will not regret it at all

thanks for the info! Yea, I really like the 92-95 style. Especially with a body kit (not "overcooked rice", tho), mags, etc.. Right now, I am thinking of getting the evoluzione body kit for the F-bodies, but I haven't ruled out the RX-7, Supra TT, or the C5 ( I work for GM, so a used C5 would be attainable after a few years).

check this out. It's a Supra TT engine in an rx7 shell. The hood had to be custom made for the turbos and engine. I wouldn't mind the next camaros looking like that though, but without the turbo scoops and stickers.
