I was going to try the resistor thing, but came across this bypass from hawks:

anyone use this before? and if so does it work good? I think I'd rather use a module than try to figure out the resistance for my car so my key from the replaced column works correctly. I guess $50 isnt to bad a price anyways.

I'm thinking in this case "module" = a black plastic box with a resistor soldered to the wires inside. The actual parts cost to do it yourself would probably be $2 to $3. Resistors and solder are cheap. With this, you would still need to determine the correct resistance for your car as well.

Go underneath your dash and remove panels if necessary. You will need to look for a a plug that has orange shrink over 2 white wires.


Simply insert one end of the resistor into both wires so they contact the metal in both sides but do not let the resistor cross each other. Make sure it is inserted correctly and completely or resistance may or may not be measured correctly.

 

Nice guide steph, i also agree, my bypass work costed about 5 bucks. I bought a resistor pack since from radioshack and in under 2 hours had it working.

Also beware, there is a 5 minute lockout period if you put the wrong one in, thats if you don't know which resistance you're car is like myself and had to trial and error til finding the right one.

I figures I might as well just get the resistors and try that, I was just curious if the bypass module figured all that out by itslef and didnt have to test anything, and thanx for that guide, that reall help figure out what to do having pics. I was curious to see what the wires actually look like, all ive been hearing was a description.

 

some of those bypass modules are self learning.
That is what you are paying for.
There's a little more involved inside the black box.
I had to get one for my wife's 2001 malibu in order to get the remote starter I installed to function. That is passlock 2 though. Also the car had to be initially started with the correct key in order for it to learn the value. That system does not use a key resistor nor a transponder it's all in how the key sets the insides of the ignition barrel. Weird.
The resistor is the way to go though.
I have since learned another way to do passlock 2 but also forgot it...and can't remember where I read it neither.
I might have saved it on some disk somewheres but I don't think so.

 

no see. the way that little box works, is it completly bypasses the entire pass code system, its perty must takes the plase of the decoder modual that sends a signal to your ecm that says its ok to fire the fuel injectors, all the resister does is tell the decoder modual that the key is the right key
................

but if your system is realy failing, that little black box would do it

but yuor also need to cut the ground wire from your starter relay and ground it strait the the chassis, because that ground it controled by the vats system too

 

An ECM with the VATS programming (which can be turned off by
re-flashing, chip revision, etc.) expects a 0-5v 30hz signal to
start processing. The VATS module generates this signal, based
on the key reisistance and some other inputs. The "black box"
module generates this signal, and replaces this VATS module
signal into the ECM. I got one from s10wildside in ohio, for $15.
Not nearly as pretty, with the "operational led", but just as effective.

Don't forget reprogramming the ECM as an alternative.

For future ref.

Take a multimeter and Ohm the pellet in the key. This will get you your resistance for what resistor to use.

 

You don't need to access the Module. Just the 2 wires in the steering column to put the correct resistor inline.

 

I understand that but I purchased a bypass module but any have trouble find were the vats module is to install the new part.

 

Passenger side, way in the dash. The only way I've ever seen one, was after pulling the whole dash out.

Surely since Hawks sells those, they can tell you where it is/how to reach it. No instructions with it? If you bought it used, try contacting Hawks for instructions.

 

does any one know if the vats will pose a promblem when converting to a carb'd non ecm set up in a 91 bird?

 

those modules were a PITA to get to only way i've ever done it was to remove the dash enough so you could get your arm up there to take it out and i always ended up breaking my brake light switch in the process always forgot not to lay the dash on the switch

 

love the pictures stephen, but can you tell me approx where to start looking for the white wires wrapped in orange? Passenger side or drivers side?

 

Drivers side. Those wires go up into the steering column, so you'll hafta pull the panel (if you have on) on the drivers side, off, to reach them.

 

I know this is an old post but maybe i will get lucky I am having the same problem and checked my resistance got the resistors and installed it but do i have to knock out the one on the key for it to work?

 

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I need to know what the red connector is coneected to and what it does. Its right above the vats wire you guys are talking about. Purple and blue wires. I hope you can help me out. Thanks

 

Not the best picture to see all of what your talking about, but I believe that part with the red connector is the flasher relay for the turn signals.

 

you are correct on that one, thats the turn signal flasher

and to clear up a little confusion on what the bypass box really is....
it isnt just resistors in a plastic box. it actually generates a specific signal needed by the ecm. that signal is usually generated by the vats module when the correct key is inserted. the bypass box generates the signal anytime it gets power (as long as its wired to a switched 12v signal like it should be)
