would it really make a difference if I routed the intake to the back of a 4.75 inch cowl with a custom filter filling the hole. Oh yeah the reason I'm asking here is because I want to know if this would be able to feed a minirammed 420 with at least a Vortech T-Trim

Of course it would work. Why wouldn't it. You put a big pipe where it can suck a lot of clean air. How hard is that to figure out.

as for the 4 cylinders, you can make a sbc to run on 4 cylinders very easily, just work with the firing order.

Gee, everyone is going to school to become an ME, and I just quit after two years at Texas A&M. Decided I'd rather be a Marine instead.

 

Good thing about the marines is that you get to travel all over the world and experience new cultures and meet new people....then kill them.

 

yea dude, engineering is definately the way to go. i just started at stevens tech (in hoboken, not a lot of people know about it). if you like all those tech classes in high school, you'll really like the engineering classes in college.

and keep dreaming. everybody laughs at me when i tell them the first thing i'm gonna do when i get a job out of school is buy a corvette. but when i'm making 70-80k a year to START and driving my vette on the weekends, i'll be laughing.

so yea, stay in school and uh... don't do crack

i am gonna be going to MSOE (milwaukee school of engineering) for computer engineering. i wanna graduate and put a boat load of money into my firebird. average starting pay from my school for CE is 50K! and yeah college costs tons of money. who woulda thought it would be 24 grand a year???

i am going to Michigan Technological University for a BS in Mechanical Engineering. second year.

 

strill trying to figure out what school I want to go too. Not too many schools out there that focus on TCP/IP (that i can find). I'm not a genius like you guys I'm just trying to get a lowly A.A.S. in telecommuncations and networking at the local comedy college. BTW I do plan on getting a real degree once I figure out what school I really want to go to. So far Berkley sounds like a possibility (its seems they developed TCP/IP with the D.O.D. in the 60's). Right now I only have a couple of certs to hold me over through college-
CCNA (cisco certified network associate), MCP (win2k pro and server), Network+, A+.

BTW when i look for jobs for a C.C.I.E. those guys make $100,000+ (thats my ten year goal).

Hum, a little naïve WRT to choosing a college, but spend some time poking around and you’ll figure it out.

WRT the 10 year goal… well, it was possible 2 years ago, but not now. I’m not sure if it will get better either. I graduated in ’95, and back then CS was a fairly small major at most universities. Now it’s usually one of the largest (most estimates at my alma matter, Universtity of MD put it at 30-40% of the student body for the last 3 or so years).

Add to that a really screwed up economy, and it would be tough. The weird thing about the economy is that I get the impression that with IT/Networking… the attitude is currently “we don’t know what they really do, and we know we need them but since we don’t want to be spending money right now, lets not hire anyone to fill the positions that we have till **** really hits the fan.” Then the companies actually involved in the field (that is what they do, web hosting, development, consulting/deployment…), are just screwed. What’s unbelievable is how many of them have ties with Enron and Worldcom.

To give you some idea where I’m coming from, I do have a degree, I used to teach and was actually a department head at a “computer school” and have taught classes just about everything that you have certs in. From there I ended up going back to UMD and was a Systems Engineer for the University of MD Institute for Advanced Computer Studies. After 3 years there and being generally pissed off at institute politics I left there with some money saved up the intension of taking 6 moths off and then getting going again. Almost on a whim, I got my MCSE 2000/XP cert (took 7 tests in 11 days and passed them all the first time, I guess I know something).

In the mean time, I’ve gotten to looking for a new job again, but guess what, I’m not finding much and not getting any calls for interviews.

In the mean time I may be joining some of the other people in this thread. I’m seriously considering going back to school and pursuing what I should have in the first place, Mechanical Engineering. If I’m at all lucky I’ll find a way to jump in at the graduate level, but right now doing it at any level might be hard considering the stunning combination of looking for a job, big mortgage and wife in grad school.

BTW, if anyone has a line on a good job for a Computer Systems/Network Engineer/Administrator drop me a line please.

 

Im in the same boat on that one. i took every one and passed on the first time. Right now the one thing that is holding me back is that I dont have a degree of any sort. I took the CCNA exam and flew threw it with flying colors. My old CCNA teacher says i was probably 1 1/2 questions away from scoring a perfect score. I had 20 minutes left on the clock, and I knew what the hell I was doing. Frame Relay, ISDN, and T1 links are so friggin easy to configure on the routers. IP subnetting came to me one day like a dream or something. I'm trying to get my foot in the door at UTEP (university of texas at el paso) as a campus network administrator working with all the cisco equipment. If I do get it I really will be modding the hell out of my car. But this city is so freaking slow and crappy there is no jobs here ever! The only way to make cash in this city is in the medical field or in construction (civil engineering). Lets put it this way there were only 253 jobs in this mornings paper (yep the big fat sunday paper) in a city with over 600,000 people (i'm just throwing up a number it may be more, but it's definately not less). Out of those 253 jobs there is only 3 (THREE!!!!) computer/networking related positions. OMG IMHO this is a lame a$$ city. oh well, I'll just keep dreaming of building a monster camaro thats gonna swallow imports and ricers whole.

I was thinking about this today and thought "What if it rained?" Would rain be a problem?

 

it'll probably work the same as ram air, only backwards. as long as you don't put the filter like right at the opening, rain won't get in. maybe you could make some kind of a switch that would seal it off during the rain. idunno, worked on the judge

if you're thinking that that would cut off all the air going to the engine, then maybe you could keep your regular intake and just combine the 2.

 

So what you're saying is that if the filter was set back a little rain won't get in? Would 2 inches back be enough?

 

or make one of those pimpy hoods like on the 70 chevelle with the louver that opened up at a certain engine speed.

 

i'm saying you could probably look at how ram air is setup and turn it around. lots of cars have ram air, i guess there's not a lot of water getting into the engine if they're still around.

i did find a lot of bugs in the air filter of my friends grand am gt w/ ram air....
