single turbo on my 305 tpi

I've read through the stickys on turbocharging and what not and as a winter project I'm looking to do a turbo addition for my 86 ta with a 305 A4. Most of the threads I read deal with tt's...Are there any good sights with single turbo builds? My questions are(due to a tight budget and that this is a learning project);

What stock parts will need reworked/fabricated other than the exhaust?

What kind of turbo should I be looking for? I'm only looking for one that would give me a lil extra umph...the turbo coupe models?(early 5sp)?

Will I NEED an intercooler if I'm only running a a lil boost(4-6psi)?

Are there any sites out there that are GOOD for the fabrication of a single turbo in an f body?

thanks guys,
Jason

You're going to have to fabricate the ducting from the turbo to the engine. Exhaust is a big part. You need to get some extra fuel into the engine, so prom tuning or a FMU or something along those lines.

You don't see many single turbo junkyard setups because finding a single turbo to support a high hp engine is difficult. Depending on what type of power you're looking for, maybe a single GN turbo? I think something off a Powerstroke or something might be too big.

Doubt it.

thanks. I am fine with fabricating the ducting and I cam gonna have to have the exhaust turbo headers made custom. SO My biggest thing is going to be finding a turbo thats big but not too big, right? hmm....
any other suggestions anyone?

Whats your budget? If you're getting the headers custom made I'm assuming you're spending some money on this. If so, get ahold of PTE or another turbo vendor and just buy a new turbo. That will save you hassles plus (probably) give a better match to what you want.

well what do you suppose a new turbo would run me as opposed to a junkyard? The headers aren't gonna be much, my uncle owns a steel fabrication company and all I have to pay for it the metal costs..so I'm really saving a ton there. I'm still trying to figure out how big of a turbo I'll need...

A 60mm wheel turbo would be large enough to support a 305 and you can probably purchase one in the neighboorhood of $600-$700

You might check www.turbobuick.com classified ads as well. There are ALWAYS decent sized turbos for sale over there.

Keep in mind a 60mm turbo on a buick V6 will push the car into the 10 second range. On a V8 it will be enough to support the engine and who knows how fast it will go.

Good luck.

FYI, check out my website (in my sig) for pictures of my single turbo setup.

Thats actually what I was going to suggest. With the extra cubes it wouldn't take as big of a stall as the Buick's need and make plenty of power.

As I've said before, the cubes under the turbo do not determine the power made, that is up to the ammount of air that the turbo can move. ET is dependant on HP and how well optimized the chassis is to use the HP.

In other words, he should make about the same horspower, and since the cars are similar weight, it would be capable of running about the same times.
