weiand 142 blower on stock 350?
hi,
just wondering, with my motor combo, would you guys run a small weiand blower, like a 142 model,i have a stock 350,with edelbrock performer rpm heads, with 70cc chambers,im not sure of compression, but the heads i took off were 76cc,so im guessing i have mid to upper nines in compression, would one of these blowers be beneficial?or am i asking for disaster?thanks alot.

Phil, if the heads you took off were cast iron 76s and you went with 70cc aluminum heads the trade-off will be basically a wash as far as compression/resistance to detonation is concerned.
For a real quickie "sanity check" you might want to go a cranking compression test. If you have cranking compression readings above about 180 I'd steer clear of a blower until you get some lower compression pistons.
If you're OK with compression- have fun!
Just make ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that you don't run lean (install a fuel pressure gague right near the carb inlet and make sure it doesn't dip mre than 1 PSI at any point in a run) and don't go crazy with ignition timing (start by backing off about 6* from whatever your best naturally aspirated ignition timing is).
Living on the ragged edge with a blower is no fun at all (and expensive).

thers a fews guys here in town with a blown goodwrench motor, they both haul. one is a 6-71 set on stun and the other is a 142 set on kill.
Hey guys, Ive got a 1971 350 on the original build (100K on it) that has 76 cc chambers and dished pistons (just pulled a head to find out) so like 8.5:1 is what it has, and the crank and main bearing were just re done. Would I be safe bolting on a small blower (say a 177) and running like 5 lbs of boost for a year or so until I can rebuild it. Or would this blower give me a real quick reason to rebuild? Anyways, the motor runs strong, uses no oil other than the valve seals which I just replaced, runs strong with no knock. I want more power, and would like to put a small blower on, but I worry Im going to grenade the motor. Its got 4 bolt mains, and is kept to 5500 rpm and below. I figure if guys are bolting a blower to a 100,000 mile TPI, it should be just as safe to put a blower on my motor, originally out of a 71 blazer, kept to low revs as a truck motor.

Sounds like the blower will LOVE your engine. with 8.5:1 you could run more than 5 PSI, maybe like 8 PSI. if you had forged pistons I would say crank it up to 10-12 PSI, but if the pistons are cast then 6-7 should be max. 8.5:1 is perfect for a blower. just not cast pistons.
The blower shouldnt hurt your engines longevity as long as you dont detonate. detonate once however, and you may puit a hole in the pistons!!
BY THE WAY

I have one of these sitting around, not installed. How does it sound? Im thinking of putting it in place of my 303/313 cam, which is a bit radical for the street. does it do nice with those 3.X gears and does it have a notable idle? It looks like a REAL good cam for a blower. its on a 110 LSA, but thats okay cause the seat to seat is so low theres not much overlap ANYWAYS. nifty cam, it looks like.

It sounds good in the car, and idling at 600 rpm its got a good choppy lope. I have cound slips posted somewhere on the exhaust board, search for my name and it should come up. Its got plenty of part throttle response, a little slugginsh below 2000 rpm though. It works fine with my 3.23's and I have some traction issues with a posi rear. Plenty of low end torque and before I wore out the springs, it would pull to 53-5500 rpm hard with my old holley z series manifold.
Im hoping to get the blower within a year, but getting that kind of cash is tough for a poor college student.
If you want to hear those exhaust clips without searching them out, get ahold of me on AIM and Ill send them directly when Im back at school. Actually I have them burned to a cd, but on dial up it will take forever to upload, but Id be willing to do it if you want to hear it. My AIM name is either b215mike or YouCanRotInHell (the reaction when i tell people this is worth it).

I found it! sounds WICKED man... oh my ***.. i was expecting a nice smooth stock idle! i wanted to fool people so bad!
oh well, i bet the blower will quiet the cam right up!
