Twin turbo 350 summer experiment

I've decided to attempt a junkyard twin turbo setup, so with all the interest I see on the boards, I figure i'll start a thread and update it as time goes on...

The car will be a 82 z28 that I picked up for 250$ with a nice rust free body and no engine or tranny. Everything else is complete and it's a hardtop (I got tired of my t-tops).

Next I will be using a 350tpi engine (speed density) rebuilt for boost. I have a set of vortec heads laying around, but i'm not sure if i'll put those on (can someone tell me if it's worth the extra money for a vortec tpi base and new springs over stock heads???)

The turbos will be two stock 87 Grand National turbos (already have one, still bidding on another) rebuilt to stock specs.

For now I will only be able to use stock manifolds modified for the turbos (my dad owns an antique auto salvage so I have hundreds of stock chevy manifolds in differnt configurations at my disposal... plus a lot of other old parts).

I will be using an Isuzu NPR intercooler (might be a little small, but it will fit up front behind the bumper) unless I can find another intercooler for a comparable price that will meet my specs.

For engine management, I will be attempting to use the 749 ECM as outlined here:
http://www.speedtoys.com/~bort62/7749/Main.htm

For piping I am going to use flexible exhaust repair sections and intercooler hose at first until I get back to college and have the machine shop at my disposal to build nice pipes using the exhaust tubing as templates.

I will also be using 2.5 - 3 inch downpipes (havent decided yet) and true duals that dump before the rear axles. Not sure on mufflers yet, but I hear that turbos make good mufflers, so it wont be as loud as a N/A engine that is dumped.

I've probably forgot a lot of the stuff, but this is the basic outline of the project. If anyone has any ideas for me or information, feel free to contribute, cause I have this gut feeling i'm getting in over my head on this one

i'll think about it, seems like a decent price compared to what im seeing on Ebay... btw my dad got in a couple running 350's that i can throw a cam and my vortec heads i have laying around on and put in with a carb and get the hang of tuning and stuff and see how far a stock bottom end of a 350 will go

that was i can afforrd that 9inch to put in the back so it wont blow up... then i'll be willing to use it as a test car while im building it...

Forget the TPI vortec base manifold.

Get this RAMJET manifold for A blown EFI Vortec headed project.

It 'ill be worth it.

does the ram jet intake use a standard off the shelf throttle body or is it ram jet specific?

OK, besides the fact that they're ugly (I'm not sure I really care if it works well), do you know of someplace to get one for anything close to a reasonable price?

FWIW, it uses an LS1/6 style throttle body

yes that www.gmpartsdirect.com place:

intake #12489371 $387
fuel rails #12553918 $292
regulator #17123897 $61
TB 17096144 $209

its got to be cheaper elsewhere.

Um, on what planet is $1000 (plus probably a hundred shipping, you know what I mean if you've ever ordered from them, I think it cost something liek $30 shipping for a roller cam from them. Funny, they often still work out cheaper) a reasonable price for an intake? I have less in my whole car (the '87 formula 350) then $1000…

For s+h they add a flat 20% to those prices for all their products that can be shipped through a common carrier (ie not a long block or anything, that will cost much more). The prices that they advertise are what an actual GM dealership (which they are) will pay for that same part; so no, you won't find cheaper advertised prices anywhere. Their only profit is the differnce between that 20% and the actual shipping cost.

it isnt, no way no how, this makes the HSR and the LT1 intake conversion the best deal to be had.
